Ubuntu 12.04 - Segmentation fault on start
Steam won't launch recently reliably for me.

Games run great when Steam does launch.

Last few months I have had to install Steam. reinstall Steam, uninsall video drivers, reinstall video drivers, pray to buddha. Often oddly , I click the the link several times to get it to start. Happens after updates. Like having multiple instances of steam trying to start actually helps it start..

I have ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series.

Thank you for reading and suggestions.

Do you have proprietary drivers installed? If so uninstall them and go to the open source ones and try reinstalling Steam and opening it again. If Steam opens fine you can install your proprietary drivers and Steam will work fine with them.

Thank you for the replies. Steam now works.

I basically did what tayshady said:

----
#Uninstalled proprietary drivers

# uninstalled steam
sudo apt-get purge steam*

#downloaded and installed latest steam from steampowered.com

#reinstalled proprietary drivers (last year these were required to run Steam; maybe not now?)

Seems to work for the moment.

Running latest Ubuntu 12.04:

:~$ lsb_release -a

proprietary video drivers for my card no longer seem necessary to run Steam & games.

Yay!
