Steam for Linux

[Ubuntu 14.04] Segmentation fault when login
Hi all,
I recently installed 14.04 on my laptop, and installed steam on it
When i typed steam in the terminal, a window prompt out and had 3 login options.
I pressed "LOGIN TO AN EXISTING ACCONT", and the following error is printed to terminal:

Steam: An X Error occurred
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty)
Value in failed request: 0xffffffff
Serial number of failed request: 1629
xerror_handler: X failed, continuing
Uploading dump (out-of-process) [proxy '']
/tmp/dumps/crash_20140501125017_1.dmp
/home/henry/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 755: 13219 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@"
Finished uploading minidump (out-of-process): success = no

I have tried looking for the guide, but no luck.
How can i solve this problem?

Looks like X server doesn't like steam's window... What's your DE? Do you use dual monitors? Try to run steam as "steam -sw -h XXX -w YYY" (change XXX and YYY to your screen resolution).

Hey, I sort of solved the same issue you were having. The issue in my case were my AMD proprietary drivers. Switching to the open drivers solved it.

I've got the same problem and neither of the drivers work (both open source and proprietary). However, I have an nVidia graphics card.

Try soft-linking nvidia's libGL.so.1 to the one Steam points to.

I've just found the problem in my case. I had to install the drivers from ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa instead of the drivers found in the additional drivers tab from ubuntu or the drivers from the nvidia site. I'm not sure why the others don't work tough.
For someone like me I don't think I can install any other drivers, since even the open source drivers won't work for my card. (GTX 750 Ti) because it's so new. I'm pretty much stuck on the NVIDIA drivers which is fine and they work great. They worked fine with Steam at 12.10 before going to 14.04 so IDK what the problem is.
Figured it out...and it's stupid.

Uninstall your proprietary drivers and install Steam first, after Steam is installed install your proprietary drivers.

Good luck dudes...I still have a million other things to fix, stable release my ♥♥♥.
