L4D 2 + Linux Mint 16 - All of a sudden...
Running Linux Mint 16 - Cinnamon - 64 Bit

My desktop goes from what it normally looks like

to this

As I exit the game I hear the chime as if Linux Mint is booting up.

Any thoughts?

I tried replacing Cinnamon (cinnamon --replace) but that does not do anything. I have to restart the machine to get back to my default look.

Mind this is a recent thing prior to this it never happened.

Cinnamon bug?

Not sure. This started happening recently. I am thinking it's time to update the Nvidia driver. Currently I am using the 319 reccomended.

To be honest, I'd avoid Cinnamon altogether. No matter what the devs do, that DE is pure junk. It may look nice on the outside but it's terrible at handling GPU load. When I used it I experienced worse than you. P.s. global warming spread to my room.

^ What DE would you reccomend?

If you want something similar but more efficient than Cinnamon, try MATE.
Something new, GNOME 3.
Something customisable, KDE.
The list goes on.

All DEs have their advantages and disadvantages. I currently use Unity and am experiencing no problems. I have been with XFCE too and that was great too!

I would recommend GNOME, Xfce, LXDE, KDE or Enlightenment.

Personally I would avoid Cinnamon, MATE and Unity.

If you want, you could even use Openbox if you don't mind something really stripped down; be prepared to configure the OB though since it's really just a window manager and in a barebones fashion.

Thanks everyone! I tried a few DEs. Mate, Xfce and KDE. The problem and then some are gone. I moved on to KDE as it seems to be exactly the type of experience I've been looking for!

This is correct, although the problem seems to be with something Nemo depends on rather than Nemo itself. The problem cropped up a few weeks ago, and now it just does that everyonce in a while. To be clear, "closing" Nemo isn't enough, either; it needs to be killed. I have the kill applet on my bar to make it easier.

Sure is annoying, though. I've been very happy with Cinnamon, but this is getting really old really fast. The problem borks my media key shortcuts too, btw, which is what makes me think it's not Nemo /per se/, but rather something it depends on. (I use Banshee, and I have to disable/enable the media shortcut extension to get it working again.) Both problems occur at the same time, and for no apparant reason.

OK, so I got ♥♥♥♥ed off with doing all that killall nemo stuff and wrote a script....
#!/bin/bash
# Ugly hack to restart nemo when steam l4d2 (hl2_linux)
# leaves the desktop stuffed up in cinnamon.
# Autostart with your session

# Function that runs while hl2_linux is running
# and waits for it to exit then kills nemo etc.
restart_nemo(){
while [ "$(pidof hl2_linux)" ]; do
sleep 1
done
/usr/bin/killall nemo
/usr/bin/nemo -n &
# </your/other/command/here/to/reset/whatever/you/want>
# maybe "cinnamon --replace" ?
}

# Main loop that checks to see if we are running
# l4d2 (hl2_linux) every 30 seconds
while [ true ]; do
if [ "$(pidof hl2_linux)" ]
then
restart_nemo
else
sleep 30
fi
done
exit 0

Just thought id share it, as always YMMV and use at yr own risk etc....

don't forget to chmod +x it
