Missing libc.so.6 on Debian jessie

Hi,

while I'm trying to start Steam with 32-bit Debian Jessie, I get following error message:

Error: You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run:
libc.so.6

I have libc.so.6 installed and it can be found via locate:

locate libc.so.6
/lib/libc.so.6
/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
/lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libc.so.6
/usr/lib/libc.so.6

Steam was also working properly earlier, but after I updated my Debian some weeks ago, I have had these problems.

Anyone help would be nice, thank you in advance!

Do you have a /usr/lib32 folder?
You may need to make a sim-link from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 to /usr/lib32/libc.so.6.
I don't use Debian, so this is just a guess.

Did not have /usr/lib32 folder, so I created it and symlink. Now I'm getting following error:

Couldn't find bootstrap, it's not safe to reset Steam. Please contact technical support.

Tried re-installing Steam? Then see if 'bootstrap.tar.xz' is in the Steam folder. Never seen that error though, and I just realised your using 32-bit Debian so there wouldn't be a lib32 folder. Shouldn't do any harm though.

Reinstalled Steam with apt-get install --reinstall steam, and there is no bootstarp.tar.xz in the .steam folder.

Try backing up your SteamApps folder then deleting everything in the Steam folder. That might re-create the bootstrap file. Then launch Steam again.

Getting the same problem here with Debian jessie 32 bit. Steam still loads up after the error, but some games like tf2 are unplayable while others like europa universalis are. I have the file in /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 but I guess that is not where steam is looking for it? I found same issue reported here https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3252. This apparently has nothing to do with multiarch. Symlinking has reportedly fixed the problem for some but is probably only a temporary hack until an update comes.

Example:
sudo ln -s /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtinfo.so.5 ~/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtinfo.so.5

Seems that launching steam from the console with "STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam" works for me.

I think you might wanna symlink Steam's version of libc with yours. Are there any conflicting symlinks at present?

You must be a time traveler experiencing time sickness from the jump. It's November 25th 2016, not August. And this topic is from more than 2 years ago.

If you're having this issue now, then something is wrong on your end because Steam works perfectly on Debian Jessie.

Yo Zyro - Great Link for Debian/Steam/Nvidia Install.

I sure wish I saw that 6 months ago when I tried out Debian, and gave up 5 hours later with no NVidia driver or Wifi Driver working.

For NEWBIES, this tutorial seems very well th9ought out and complete. Having said that ...

It is in NO WAY INTUIITIVE, and if things go sideways you WILL be lost for sure! (without a LOT of homework).

I strongly suggest, sticking with Ubuntu derivatives which has made this OFTEN daunting task ...
