the expert installer option on that dvd allows partitioning. like they said you'll want to back up your files just in case.

Every linux distro can be installed in a partition alongside other operational system. All you need is a partitioner (which CompanionTube already said is included in SteamOS) and a boot loader, like grub2 for example. But even if the distro doesn't provide you these tools, you can partition your HD before the instalation and put a boot loader on the mbr using any rescue live-cd for that purpose. But I guess SteamOS already comes with these things.
