OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems?

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and I get this when I installed Steam. I have a Radeon R9 270X, I guess I'm running the latest drivers (I installed ubuntu today.) Is there a way to fix this?

Did you update your video card driver, or are you using the driver that came with ubuntu?

I agree with phillippi2. 12.04 is quite old at this point. Although Canonical often continues updating driver packages for prior releases of Ubuntu the updates still tend to be well outdated by the time Canonical releases them. This delay becomes more pronounced the older the Ubuntu release gets so you should visit AMD's website for the latest drivers.

I would recommend to download specific drivers from official site and install them.

IMPORTANT: In worst case scenario: you can destroy your system by manually installing drivers !

Installation:

1. remove old drivers of AMD
3. open terminal
2. go to download location where you stored driver files
4. login as root:

 > su

5. run driver installation:

 > chmod 750 amd-catalyst-XX.XX-linux-x86.x86_64.run
 >./amd-catalyst-XX.XX-linux-x86.x86_64.run

> aticonfig --initial -f

> reboot

Deinstallatio:

>apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle

Something going wrong whilst manually installing graphic drivers is unlikely to destroy your system. It will leave you with nothing but a command line to try and fix it with though.

12.04 is quite old at this point. However, if you want more up to date graphics drivers without doing a manual installation you can always add this repository to your system:

Or this one for something a bit less cutting-edge:
