Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Running steam games with a different version of wine than the one steam is running on
so idk if most people have this figured out i haven't found anything online or maybe i m just that much of a beginner at this but i got steam for windows downloaded and working fine but if i understand correctly some of the games i want to play run better on different versions of wine. I am using play on Linux and it chooses which version of wine is best to run the program with. Does anyone know how i can download a game via steam and run the game with different versions of wine( steam being run with wine 1.7.8 x86)

You would have to install Steam for every game then. It is possible - but makes only sense if you really want it.

I am not sure if it still matters that much to use older versions of wine currently. I think the current versions are great although not everything will work …

I personally only have one major Wine version. Idk it might be interesting to hear of other optimisations. :)

Another good way to find this out will be the Wine forum on http://www.winehq.org/ .

Good luck!

Are you searching for a Linux software which offers you a way to install different games with different Wine versions? Maybe you should install "PlayOnLinux". You can find some tutorials at youtube.

i am using play on Linux, what i am trying to do is open steam with whatever version of wine allows it to open and then open a game that i have downloaded via steam with a version of wine that works best for it
i also have another question, i just got quake 3 working OK but it doesn't have a windowed option and i don't think its gonna work properly if i force it how do i get the program i've loaded to show over everything i got it to work in starcraft 2 but only because it has a windowed full screen option in the settings.

Create in PlayOnLinux menu shortcuts for every steam game and assign different wine version for each one.

Edit: Remember that Steam doesn't work anymore (in online mode) with older versions of Wine.

To install different Wine versions in the main window go to:

Tools > Manage Wine Versions

To change a Wine version for a specific game, select its icon in the main window and click the configure button. This'll open a new window where you can select the Wine version from a drop down menu.

You can only use one Wine version per Wine bottle (POL calls them virtual drives) so you need to install each of your games (each with their own Steam client) into individual Wine bottles. I don't know if the automated scripts do this.

Here's what my POL looks like with the config menu open to give you an idea:

To fix your Quake resolution settings, Open your Wine Config for steam, and select the virtual desktop setting at whatever resolution. Have Fun!
[420]0589651 i tried that but when i open quake 3 the screen size changes to a smaller window i can get steam itself to fit my native resolution(i was hoping quake would just fit the screen as it would normally but when i open the game is when it changes. is there a way to have it not change the size of the window automatically?
here are some screenshots if anyone wants to take a look i really have no what to do about it
