1. some people would do it anyway
2. to shut the mouth of so-called "power users".
Think of the SteamBox as any other console and SteamOS as the thing running on it. Would you recommend linux Mint switching to the core of whatever drives the xbox 360? Or the PSP? Forget SteamOS as a general use distro. We already have literally hundreds of them and it would also defeat the purpose.
Mint already has a Debian based flavor, so making a Debian based based flavor would not make sense anyway...
SteamOS is like a upgraded Debian so it does make sense to do, as the LMDE is a unstable rolling release, also SteamOS, may end up having, the biggest developers base, so it will make even more sense, to use SteamOS as Linux Mint's core, as many developers use Linux Mint today.
Also, since LMDE exists, would it be much work for Mint to release a LMSOSE (Linux Mint SteamOS Edition)? Does LMDE imply that the building blocks for a SteamOS-edition of Mint are already available? In which case, would it not be safer for Mint to release a LMSOSE in addition to, rather than as a replacement of the Ubuntu core?
they're many licensing issues with using Ubuntu as a core as SteamOS is base on Debian Debian has no real licensing issues the only down side to this is PPA's for some users the ones who use them the translate from Ubuntu to SteamOS will be a bumpy road only do to PPA's there is also tanglu Linux that plans to have PPA's and is base off from Debian but they have so few developers they can't even get a release out in time they're only in beta atm
It works, what's wrong with it!? I get CONSTANT FLACK about using it and quite frankly I just don't understand.
Does anyone know when we switched to cannibalising our own?
when CLA's and bad licensing issues happen also people use to hate on redhat when they had a CLA's too they done away with them and even now own CentOS
Canonical provide a huge amount of resources to the community. It's not surprising they don't want other distributions riding on their coat-tails, receiving only sneers and derision instead of thanks.
I don't like Ubuntu as a product any more so no longer use it, as is my choice. I still receive support from Canonical though as worthy backports get implemented in Debian, which flow on to derivatives such as SteamOS. Thanks, Canonical.
If I was limited for choice, I'd pick Canonical to maintain my operating-system over Valve as some of you are suggesting with using SteamOS.
You can use firefox that was over a logo LOL also the Iceweasel fork says Mozilla Corporation really big on it so it's not really the same type of issue it was about the logo being non-free they had permission to use the trademark in firefox
but i think this has more to do with Linux Mint's OEM partnership
also you can upgrade Debian 7 to SteamOS and did you see how welcoming a lot of the Debian developers was to Valve when they found out SteamOS was a fork of Debian this is part of why i like Debian many memebers of it's community are welcoming and Btw SteamOS is getting a lot of it's bug fixes from the community's ;)
Debian even has a page for it's Derivatives
https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census/SteamOS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_by_the_Debian_project
You're right they are better to change their core, but wrong to what. They should be a Debian derivative instead of swapping Canonical for Valve.
