Minimum config for Linux & dependencies
Hey all just some feedback to a better steam on linux experience.

It had occured to me when i searched the web for SteamBox configuration setting and files that it would be far simpler if Steam could release a list of dependencies for their standardised configuration to run steam.

For those that dont know, Steam provides a baseline GNU Linux platform for games to be ported/run on GNU Linux, particularly for the SteamBox. It would be good to know this baseline so that people like me can know exactly what the Games need to have in the keornel so they can run reliably.

I am sure it wont be that much hard work for a Steam developer to make a page listing minimum kernel config, dependencies, compile options for the GNU Linux platform and so on. It is not lke we are asking for the closed source binary secrets just the break down of the basic platform requirements required for Steam on the GNU Linux Desktop to run properly.

For instance does the baseline include OpenVG for the desktop steam binary? Is it solely dependent on the Xorg server or does it partly use Wayland etc? I am sure you get the picture.

I am almost certain with the correct baseline information most GNU Linux platform users would be able to fix a large percentage of game crashes and problems in the knowledge of this.

Just a thought...

P.S. Why is there not a SubForum for "Steam GNU Linux", they have a "Steam for MAC, SteamMobile" and so on?

There is, but it hasn't been linked to the game hubs yet. I'll move the thread there for you.

The thing you're asking for already exists, it's called the Steam Runtime.

It would be helpful to have this hub listed at Community -> Discussions page.

@ OP
Kernel config has little to do to Steam directly, compile options -- as well.
Dependancies, that is the libs you have to install to run Steam, were already listed somewhere, in "Steam for Devs" discussions, or in Steam's Wiki, like that. Arch Wiki also has a list, as far as I remember.
