Steam for Linux

Segmentation Fault when starting Steam
Hi,

I have just installed Steam on my Asus Zenbook Prime ux31a and it crashes when I select "log into an existing account".

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 and the graphics card is an Intel HD4000
I have the latest intel open source driver installed.

Terminal spits out the following suggesting that it's an X problem:
Steam: An X Error occurred X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty) Value in failed request: 0xffffffff Serial number of failed request: 771 xerror_handler: X failed, continuing Uploading dump (out-of-process) [proxy ''] /tmp/dumps/assert_20140711175451_1.dmp /home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 755: 3866 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$PLATFORM/$STEAMEXE" "$@" Finished uploading minidump (out-of-process): success = yes response: CrashID=bp-39fda3c1-bad8-4370-87f5-e14ad2140711

Any ideas as to what I can do?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about Intel's drivers, but for AMD proprietary drivers, you need to install steam before you do them. Atleast for Ubuntu 14.04
Cheers for the reply but unfortunately I don't think there are any proprietary Linux drivers for Intel. Even the Intel website points to the open source ones which are included with Ubuntu by default.
I'm struggling with this one haha
Sounds like one of the potential problems is a locale issue:

Otherwise I'd suspect a driver issue. Does glxgears work properly?
It works! It indeed was a locale issue.

Running the following in the terminal worked:
LC_ALL=C steam

Cheers to you AmericanPaleAle!
amazing!!

thanks AmericanPaleAle!!
