Steam for Linux

Ubuntu 14.04 64bits, how play without steam runtime
Hello, do we have a guide on how to start steam using the command STEAM_RUNTIME=0 , and install list via apt-get about the 32bits native packages required for steam on linux? In most games i found audio problems , because of the outdated/incompatible libaries steam runtime bundles. Disabling works but i don't know all the packages necessary to start steam.

these are the packages that are bundled with arch linux to use steam_runtime=0 you should be able to find the same in ubuntu https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/steam-native/
Thanks for your help.

Last time I tried, this did not pull in the dependencies needed.
(Debian's package does, I wonder why Ubuntu's does not/didn't.)

apt-get install steam has always worked for me on Ubuntu and Mint. On Ubuntu you must enable the mutliverse repo first.

I tried in in a VM with a fresh Ubuntu installation, and AFAIR it opened a terminal and tried to do some installing there, which is not at all how a deb package should pull in other packages...

You're in a terminal and it opens another terminal? You probably mean this:

Erm, no. I can differentiate a terminal from a message box. Maybe I'll give it a try to reproduce.

Lol, good. But your comment makes no sense. Even if it could somehow open another terminal how would that 2nd terminal have root privledge to do any installing?

I didn't say it makes sense. I neither said it was actually working.

Sorry Zyro, but what is your point here exactly? Because we're kind of just derailing the thread now. I only linked the Ubuntu Steam package to show what the dependencies were as claimed by Ubuntu (since the previous link given was for Arch Linux).

My point is that to the best of my knowledge, the Ubuntu Steam package has the technical dependencies not properly defined and such would not solve the problem.

Ok, I did another Ubuntu VM installation with 14.04.03 (fully updated), and Steam installed just fine, without additional terminals opening. It might have been a problem with 12.04.

@OP: Did it work out now?

Our postings overlapped. It works in 14.04.
I'm not much into reporting Ubuntu bugs. I'm not an Ubuntu user, I just did it for test reasons back then.
Ok, i already installed steam from ubuntu 14.04 64bits default repositories. Installation pulled all 32bits necessary packages to run steam, but NOT all necessary packages to run steam without the builtin bugged runtime. I tested some games like geometry wars 3: Evolved. With steam runtime audio gliches ands pops, but running the same game using steamappid.txt method, which does use the default ubuntu .so libraries, the game audio is simply perfect. That's why i think almost all audio problems on steam games comes from those steam runtime libraries

How is it a bug when OP is trying to use his/her system libs vs using the Ubuntu 12.04 steam libs? This something valve just dont wanna fix or just don't seem to care at all on updating. A lot of changes have happened to linux and linux gaming since 12.04 came out, OP you're better off using a distro such as Manjaro. They have this stuff bundled and easy to install.

Yeah, about that...I'm on manjaro and no, it's definitely an issue. Civ V native won't run with steam runtime libraries and I refuse to install a duplicate steam to run it in parallel with native libs. This whole thing is a stupid mess.
As of today, i am gaming on Manjaro Kde. For some problematic older native linux games (year 2016 or below) i am using "Steam Linux Runtime" libraries. Older games need pulseaudio or some specific libraries not available o newer distros. Manjaro is much better than ubuntu, for my gaming needs.
