The problem is that most people think that to run steam on Linux they only have to install steam. They come to Linux with a Windows mentality. You have to check a lot of things before install the steam client, like i386/x86/32bits libs or dependencies. I only use Debian Sid + Nvidia, so... i can only help with that.

Because it is absolutely true if you have a supported distro. Otherwise you're on your own of course. Same thing applies to windows. Try to run it on Windows 95...

1) Tell that to people having problems with steam+ubuntu

2) xubuntu 14.04 and ubuntu 14.04 have the same base. "Try running it on Windows 95" is like saying try to running it on a Linux distro from 1995. We're not talking about a distro from 1995, they're the same, just with a different desktop environment.

They have 14.04 which is not officially supported...

ok, some people have problems with the "officially supported linux distro"
better now?

I have several years of experience with Linux, and while it is usually necessary to install dependencies separately, Steam installation scripts are supposed to install all the packages required to run. Somehow installing 32bit dependencies got it past those errors (even though I have a 64bit system), but it's still got a segfault.
