Steam on EL6 (HowTo)
Much as I am sick and tired of fixing and working around unnecessary problems and limitations in software written by other people, I managed to get this working, so I figure I'd share.

De-linkified due to form spam prevention measures, you'll have to copy and paste:

In the absence of a proper fix (which we are unlikely to get), this should provide a workable solution for now.

Are you refering to Enterprise Linux 6, as in RedHat/CentOS? I ask because CentOS 7 is out now and may have new enough software packages to be compatible with Steam.

If you followed the link you would in fact be aware that I am indeed referring to RHEL/CentOS and derivatives thereof.

Yes, EL7 probably satisfies all the package dependencies, but it also still has some fairly major issues, and the userbase of EL7 is still tiny compared to the EL6 userbase. And thrusting wholesale version inflation upon your paying customers is not a good thing.

issues?

Too many to summarize concisely. I think I'll wait for 7.1.

There is nothing at all "vage" about it. And if your machine is that fragile to malware you have already lost.
