Why cant steam download windows games from windows?
ok, yes, the title was confusing and obvious as heck but, bear with me here!

so, why cant steam download windows games on the linux client? my idea is that it just uses WINE to run the games. i mean, if you're using linux, there's a big chance that you would have wine installed. if using wine with steam for windows works, i reckon using the wine with steam for linux would work.

so how i THINK it would work is like, when you download a windows game on linux, it promts you, asking if you have wine installed. if you go through with the download, the game just launches using wine.

sorry if this makes no sesne, i'm not good at explaining things with words i guess.

if you're talking about wine then just run steam under wine (windows version) and it will download everything. steam games need steam app running, windows games need windows version of steam

how your linux version of steam would know you have wine and steam installed under it?

eh, it is rather annoying having to go through that imo.

dunno. I have 2 wine prefixes for different games. you can have multiple wine prefixes. how you would tell linux steam what to use?

I hope steam native support wine.

how so?

you install WINE and steam.exe and that's it. After that you use (the seperate) steam launcher to start all windows compatible games.

You can download the WIndows version of a game with SteamCMD (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD).

>steamcmd.sh login <Steamusername> app_update <SteamAppId> validate quit

you also need an "appmanifest_<SteamAppId>.acf" in the STeamApps directory. Just copy an existing and adjust its content. The Linux steam client would run it of course. You need to write a start script to run it with wine.

It's at least a solution to download the windows files of a game you own. :toxictitan:

Windows steam games include a steam stub as part of the drm. As soon as you launch them, they call out for the steam client (the windows one) to check game ownership. If you launch them in wine without the windows version of steam installed, they'll just show an error message. Just like launching them on windows, without steam being installed. So you need it installed to launch the games. Then you can use it to download them too.
