Solus Issues
I have given up on Solus 3 . I am able to make a usb boot drive and run it no problem . After this you start the install . I take the next steps by entering all the names and password , picking location . I get so far and it quits and states drive has changed . I restart it and it stops the download even sooner . I have already loaded mint and 2 different ubuntus . I only used one OS at a time . I had issues with ubuntu but was able to get it after a couple tries . I am green so I have to assume I did something wrong .
I burned the image in both ISO and DD . Solus recommends DD . Both would run but not install . I just wonder if anyone else has had an issues ? It is suppose to be a simple burn and load . I would still like to try it so if any of you have any suggestions it would be appreciated . Im moving on to Fedora for now .

There could be a number of reasons for the failure (disk space, disk partitioning, incomplete installation disk image are a few guesses) so it would be helpful if you are able to make a more detailed note of the error message you see.

If you haven't already, you should probably ask for help instead on the Solus forums (the Installation help part is at https://solus-project.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=cb0d4146e374a41d460692d1c1edf7e2) as you'll find more people who can help you there.

mASTER mCcHIKEN,

Perhaps the problem is that your disk is in Legacy Mode (MBR0 and not thre current GPT/UEFI Mode Bios/Partition Mode.

When Ubuntu installs it will complain that it is in one of the 2 modes and if it is not it oddly just tells youj to press the "Back" button, and with no extra warning it installs in the "Other Mode" Legacy/MBR or GPT/UEFI. So make sure your partition table and BIOS mode agree with each other.

I bet that is the problen.

To be clear if it's old school BIOS its in MBR Partition Table and needs to install in LEGACY MODE. ... So you would need to go iinto our BIOS and "enable' "Legacy" mode.
If it's newer and "Gparrted" or "Disks" say its a GPT Partition Table be sure to install it in UEFI Mode and disable lEGACY IN THE bios.

Forget Solus or Fedora and choose Ubuntu if yhou want more help from me as it is what I am used to.
Or any "Debian' OS like Mint or Debian (Don't use Debian irts for experienced users. ...

again install Ubuntu 17.10 it has the best graphical installer that i know of

Sorry for the redundancy but since yhou're a "Newbir" it's better for me to be redujndant for clarity. It can be hard for us experienced Linux Users to remember how to talk to newbies

As ALWAYS ... Trying to help, Mark
p.s. If and when you BIOS/DISKS/Partitions are set up correctly ... Ubuntu will install EASY PEASY TRUST ME.:steamhappy:

I have 16.04 on an old dual core . This computer I want to run games on . I want windows 7 , Ubuntu16.04 and a Linux gaming platform all on their own drives .CSGo was really laggy on ubuntu . I tweeked it with some online tips and it helped a lot but not enough . 16.04 will be normal desktop . Windows 7 and whatever Linux platform I find will be only gaming . I read Solus and Fedora were the best pick for CSgo and other demanding games .

I got Fedora loaded but had issues with loading nvidia drivers . It sucks too because it took a long time . When something takes a long time and your not sitting in front of the computer it logs you out and turns the screen off . Does this affect the download ?

My Mobo is a Gigabyte Z68 from 2009 . It has EFI but not UEFI . I'm just booting from the f12 menu right now between win7 and whatever OS im playing with both on their own SSD . It did have legacy support enabled on the USB . I have only used the default MBR setting on rufus when i burn a flashdirve .

I need all the redundedcy I can get right now . I thought support was ending on 17.10 soon ?

Ubuntu 17.10 is WAY better oddly this time then Ubuntu-Gnome LTR 16.04-3, as it is striving to unite all Ubuntu Users by finally agreeing to drop Unity and its LightDM for GNOME Shell 3.26.2's awesomeness and GNOME Tweaks 3.26.2.1, and GTK+ 3.22.25, and new Wayland Support, and HiDef 4K ... better networking, ...
best support ... any way tired right now.

But w.r.t. ypur point, yes it is not a LTR, but will update to Ubuntu 18.04 which is their most promising and most aggressive attempt at getting Ubuntu finally AWESOME AGAIN.

So no worries that 17.10 is NOT a LTR,

Cheers, Mark:steambored:

Im still confused on the multi boot terminology . I dont want more then one running at a time . Yes I want one OS on each SSD . Is that multi boot or is multi booting loading more than one OS at once ? Doing that I also wonder if windows is secure on its own drive when im in linux on another drive .I can still access folders in it with linux . Windows 7 is going to be gaming only . I do run Norton on windows but just turn the firewall on for Linux . If Im in linux im pretty sure Norton isnt on .

Giving up ? Heck no . Im just a little disgusted on solus . It was suppose to be more plug and play . I knew what I was getting into on fedora but at least I got it to install . It took me an hour to figure out how to get into root for fedora . I downloaded the ISO 3 times for solus and burned it twice in ISO and the last time in DD . All in MBR . It runs great live just wont install . Steam wont install on Ubuntu until you have video drivers loaded so maybe its something weird like that . I'll join the forum rednammoc gave me the link for and do some digging on solus .Im too ignorant for fedora right now . I'll play with that down the road

You're installing both OSs on seperate drives or side a side on the same one. You're always running only one of them at a time, just as you said. It's often called dual (or multi) boot.
Col. McChiken Jan 6, 2018 @ 9:55am
Ahh . I was thinking if you loaded linux on windows you would boot in windows to run linux on the side like an app . So loading side by side will always give you the option on which OS or partition to boot from ? You never run one OS inside another on dual or multi boot ? Now UEFI is just additional software built into the MOBO for additional options on Dual or Multi Boot ?

Im looking at getting a Ryzen 1700x . I have been researching MOBO's . I want one for gaming but also look for the most plug in support . USB 2.0 , 3.0 , 3.1 . I like lots of plug ins . I was looking at the Asus ROG Hero boards . Looks like the UEFI is pretty standard on newer boards
Zyro Jan 6, 2018 @ 12:23pm
You will have the option which system to start on every boot. AFAIK, this can also be done using UEFI, but the usual way for Linux users is using a program called grub.
It's possible to run Windows "inside" Linux using a virtual machine, but I would advise against.
BTW, if you don't have the hardware yet, buying an nvidia GPU will make things easier on Linux.

I was thinking of pulling the ryzen trigger today but I want some confirmation that Spectra and meltdown wont effect it . If it gets slowed by the fix I wont buy anything for a while . I have a gtx770 that I will use a little longer . I am dissapointed on the drivers for nvidia linux compared to windows but I have done enough reading to understand what your saying . I am thinking 6-8gig 1080 . I tried grub 2 a little but was lost . Grub training will go along with my partitioning training real nice . I want to load budgie on ubuntu now . I like to pretty things up . I killed my OS the last time I tried to put it on . I think I can do better now . :)

I still am curious about my security question on my prior post . That concerns me . Will my windows SSD be secure when I am booted to my linux SSD ? Im not running anything but firewall on Ubuntu 16.04

If you're keeping your system up-to-date (as you should with every system), your Linux will be more secure than Windows.
Col. McChiken Jan 6, 2018 @ 2:57pm
I check daily for updates . No one is secure right now . Linux , mac and windows . I wonder if the fix will affect linux speed . My desktop looks hella better with Budgie . I really think the resolution is better too . Might just be me . I need another drive now to play with solus . I might just get a 125gig . They are hella cheap now

Wow thanks for the response . Your answers tell me I made the right choice in loading and learning linux . I saved that link . Looks like that will have some good info . That patch sped it up too . Thats awesome .
