I have the same issue. Steam says it's preparing the game, and installing Microsoft VC, but then the window goes away and it doesn't do anything.

AMD 64 X2 4800+
2GB RAM
ATI X1250 700MB
DirectX 9.0c
DirectDraw is enabled, and I tested it (in dxdiag) and it works.

I got the "couldn't initialize graphics driver" bug. Oh well, at least I got my uncle's old Windows 98 athlon and the original game to play.

Have you all checked for Windows updates and updated your drivers?
bd10m Apr 11, 2013 @ 4:49pm
Ok, I updated to XP SP3 and got all the other updates from there. Also, I already had the latest video driver. I can now launch the game, so, huge improvement. However, when I actually start a single-person game, I get a white screen where the map should be.

So basically, I made major progress, but the game is still really messed up. I know the developers are supposedly working on this, but when it takes this long, it'd be nice to be kept in the loop.

bd, from what I can see, that X1250 does not support DirectX 9.0c, which is consistent with other reports of the white screen issue - an unsupported graphics card.
