Game lagging

I've been having lag issues with the game lately. It glitches or freezes often when I get to the imperial age with a lot of units. A lot of people have mentioned this problem, but I still haven't received any confirmation that the developers are even working on it. I have played this game with people who have just as good of a computer as I do, just to find it still glitches. I've been reading something about ports though, do I need to do something with my ports? If so, what is it? I think it would be a good idea for the developers to work on speeding up the game either way, this is definitely worse than the original Age of Empires version.
