Able to change the rules or not?

I've always loved Monopoly, and I'm tossing up whether to get it or not.
The way I used to play is when you landed on a property, you didn't have to buy it or auction it straight away. I no this isn't the way to play the game, but is there a setting that allows my way of playing the game?
