start-up in 800x600 & full screen - unusable!

I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. When I start either Overture or Black Plague, the game starts up fine, but in 800 by 600 res & full screen. So my whole screen is taken over by (I'm guessing here) the top left hand corner of the main menu screen - I can't get to any menu item to reset the display. So does anyone know if there are there any command line switches to force resolution? Or of any other work-arounds?

Well on Ubuntu i dont know coz i never used it, on windows there is a folder in my documents called Penumbra Overture in there, there is a settings.cfg file. opened with notepad there is resoultion settings 4 lines from the bottom. Dont know if it helps

On linux, the file is located in ~/.frictionalgames/Penumbra/Black Plague/. Edit settings.cfg, and search for "<Screen". Keep in mind that "~" means your home folder.

I Have the problem but for windows, can you tell me the steps?

I have the same problem.
The screen is out of bounds and I cant get it to center the text on any of the penumbra games.
Ive tried editing the config my screen resolution 3800x1800. Tried other resolutions too.
Tried changing 'full screen' to both true and false.

No matter what I do text is always cut off. It also means I cant adjust the resolution using the ingame menu as I have no idea where the apply button is (due to being out of bounds)

@burntbreadman: There are only a few forum posts on there, but one guy says he got it running with 5040x1050, so it sounds like ultra-wide screen should be possible. But, because all thats happening is the 4:3 image being streched, it will probably look a bit rubbish (perspective & cutsceens) - I remember it looking/playing oddly on my old 1920x1080 because of that, and it will only be worse on super-wide screen...

Its the method I tried and failed with XD
No matter what resolution I use there are parts of the picture out of bounds (eg not shown on the screen)
I did some research and I think my problem has more to do with compatibility problems with windows 10. Turns out some can get it to work on windows 10 whilst others have this oit of bounds problem.

Oh well I guess Ill have to fork out for the PS4 version......unless anyone one else can point me to the right direction.

For anyone that makes the games resolution 1900x1200 and is unable to change it back due to the mouse not moving at all while in the menu, this may help.
