"Hardcore Mode" (The Hicks Version)
In the latest message from the dev team, Hicks mentions there has been some discussion regarding the possibility of introducing a new "Hardcore Mode" on a small number of private servers. The centerpiece of this mode would be allow server admins to set a respawn timer, (Hicks gives the example of a 12 hour timer.)

This would mean that the avatar would only exist on that server (because it would be on a private shard...sorry, server hoppers) and if you die you'd be off the server for 12 hours. You'd either need to take a break, switch to another private server (if you're using one) or go onto public for a while until your dead "main" avatar can respawn on its home server.

I'm bringing this up because I saw a lot of negative comments about the idea and I think they are understandable but misguided.

I already have this dynamic going basically and it hasn't cause any problems for me yet. I use a couple of private servers for my primary characters, and of course have my default public ones. I prefer to use the private avatars, but if the server is full, down or I am playing with someone who doesn't have a character available on that server, then we simply switch to public for a bit.

Hasn't caused a problem yet, and lets me pursue a range of different play styles. My friends seem to agree that this a good way to play and I've yet to hear a complaint of any kind from anyone...most of the discussion centers more on which avatar we feel like playing that day.

Having a seperate character available on a real (well, more real at least) Perma-Death server would be great IMO. Everyone on that server would always have to consider the consequences of their next action. Just pointing a gun at someone could result in a chain of events ending in your character being "dead" on the server for the next 12 hours. Can you imagine the difference in the player dynamics that would result?

I hope they do go forward and implement this. People who don't like it, don't have to play those servers.

Discuss.

I think this kinda "if you die, you can´t play on the server for x amount of hours" has been up on reddit since SA came out, and I would love this idea. Not only does dying mean that you lose your gear, you would lose the ability to play, so you value surviving more. I would love to play like this.

If they want to remove the price of renting a server then I'm all for not being able to respawn on my server, given that private servers cost more than public servers already I can't see too many hosts going for it. Why not add it to the public servers after all the majority of the problems are there.

Its an option server owners can turn on or off. Some people do actuerly want a more hardcore experience. This is for them.

It's not hardcore since it can't be implemented on public. All because of KOS of fresh spawns. Hardcore should mean harder survival experience.

If I die on your server,Ill go to the next one and you will be paying for an empty server.
There no such thing as Perma-Death when I can have a toon on every server.I die ,I jump to the next one.
I have to start as a fresh spawn If im killed(by ladder, stairs, jumping a rock etc) anyway,so it better that I stay on your server.

I dont think I'll be paying for an empty server just because 1 person left, you aren't as important as many of you think you are. If everyone stops paying for servers where will you play then ? The handful of official servers? good luck trying to fit everyone on those.

My point was why would anybody pay extra for a private server then add a feature where they may only spawn on it twice in 24 hours? it's a stupid suggestion and idea unless they want to put it on the free servers where most the hacking / glitching / duping occurs then and only then maybe will it make people consider what they do.

How exactly does limiting to 2 spawns actually make anything harder? it just makes the same game more limited it doesn't in anyway increase the difficulty.

I am one of those people that wants a more hardcore experience this isnt harder. Increased difficulty would be reduced , loot spawns, reduced food, stagnet ponds etc etc these simple things would make it harder not having to move from one server to another because I died twice.

I hate to break the news to you, but its the other way around, there are hundreds of empty private server to pick from.

It aint breaking any news those public servers pay for themselves? or do people rent them ? so again "If everyone stops paying for servers where will you play then ?" Like I originally said you aren't the be all and end all of servers, most people rent them for themselves and their friends, many are kind enough to open them to joe public, most probably just dont like the increased price for a private shard as it is by no means cheap and would happily lock it from joe public given the opportunity.

Private servers are not the only rented servers.

Youre looking at it wrong, this is a feature that wont have impact on the server total, because this is something that'll be very rarely used.
It's not as if everybody will use this and get banned from their own servers then stop renting one and go one.
Most people wont turn this on just because of that reason.

I didnt think of that, getting killed on your own server and cant play for 12 hours.
Hard core is going to take of like a lead balloon
