Game status
Hello!

We read some topics about the status of the game (alpha, beta, gold, ...).

We consider the current game build fully playable and enjoyable. We plan to add A LOT of new features. Those features can take years to be finished. So, we have decided to release the game (again, fully playable) and slowly update it with new patches.

I love the game. I hope you guys add a lot of features and make a lot of money. I still think YOU would benefit from rewriting the store page.

Primary questions I have while looking at buying this game:
1) When can we expect an updated tutorial?
2) When will you stop breaking save games on a regular basis? (looking at the patch notes on the game site forums, this seems to happen like every other version, which is far too often for my liking)

Good of you to come out and respond to these threads. :)

I for one will have to disagree though.
The tutorial is totally unbearable.
Tutorial on spider: Kill 10 spiders.
What? Didn't teach me anything.

There are (currently) so many things that needs to be sorted out.
Why build walls? Seems to be no need. Does roofs have a purpose?

Why does my villagers try to kill enemies when they have no weapons or armor, are not soldiers, and are not ordered to do so? Would make more sense if they ran away.

Until these kind of basic things are sorted out I simply cannot agree that this game is fully enjoyable and playable.
I said that I would buy this when it's a full release. But now... I'm gonna have to take that back.
Still gonna keep an eye out though ;-)

If by "playable" you mean "you can do various stuff within game" -- indeed, it is. However, there's hardly a game ever that is "unplayable" by that definition.

However, I'd like to point out that the game in its current form doesn't have a gameplay -- that is, a kind of to-do list for the player with proper incentive for him to go on and progress through that list. Even a sandbox kind of game should have such a thing (In fact, all the good sandbox games do. Yes, even Minecraft as it hit 1.0).

Furthermore, the initial lack of gameplay is made worse by a VERY controversial "description-vs-mechanics" state of affairs. It's a game called "Towns" in which you don't have and don't need to build a town. The central idea is that there's a dungeon below your town and you should "capitalize" on it, but there's ZERO flavor and/or description text inside the game to point you that way. There's "sieges" to provide an incentive for a player to further explore the dungeon and get better stuff, but they appear pretty much out of the blue and leave you wondering something along the lines "wtf was that?".

And I'm not even touching the stuff lying right on the surface, like horrible tutorials.

Can you spin the view angle around or do you only have the one-direction viewpoint, fixed in place? You can get people stuck in mines because you can't see the ground they're on and you can accidentally block them off.

how do you get this working
copper1956 Nov 8, 2012 @ 12:25pm
Fun, fun... So the developers consider this like finished product ready for market while even fans believe it is alpha. I also think that the ugly font and UI occupying 1/3 of the screen are nice features...

I played the demo for the first time yesterday, and the tutorial worked for me. This is probably because I started from the very first tutorial mission, so by the time I got to the one that told me to "kill 10 spiders, they're on level 3" I knew how to get there. It might have helped i had some Dwarf Fortress experience as well.

According to the wiki, enclosed rooms (walls, roofs, door, ect) are generally 35% more productive. This means a personal room would be 35% more restful, a carpenter zone would produce things 35% faster, ect.

Why does my villagers try to kill enemies when they have no weapons or armor, are not soldiers, and are not ordered to do so? Would make more sense if they ran away.
Yeah, they are pretty gung ho. If you build a hospital they're supposed to break off before they die, but I'm not sure how reliable that is because I never have. I find the solution is to put them in wooden armor with stone spears, and that's good enough to handle most threats they're going to run across on the surface. They're not supposed to be the ones that clear the dungeons, that's the job of heroes. If you designated a couple guards, this assures there's a couple villiagers who only help other villiagers who got into a fight.

So, yeah, since they believe this is a "finished" state, they completely deserve all the hate they are getting for this game.
That's a factual error: they believe that the game is "playable" (undoubtedly) and "enjoyable" (to some, undoubtedly). They also believe that it's enough to release it non-free on Steam. I'd say they are being very wrong on this last part.

The game is a complete farce. There is absolutely no excuse for the state of the "tutorial" . Either the game is unfinished, or it is awful. If it's unfinished, the store page should reflect this fact.
ExpendableGrunt Nov 8, 2012 @ 2:47pm
OP, will you be playing any part in us getting a refund for buying this "game" based on its ♥♥♥♥♥♥*t store page, or do I need to direct all my inquiries to Steam support?

Store description is a bit misleading. Tutorial is confusing. I played for about 40 minutes and went back to dwark fortress. As far as people calling it a finished game; I believe the version number in game is 0.3 something so the developers obviously know it's not a finished game. The UI is not at all intuitive and I think searching through those menus for 35 minutes to find the carpenter's workshop and other basic buildings is what turned me off. At least until another day.
