A bug with crafting the Red brick roof.
There I was, starting a new town, when I noticed one of the roofs wasn't building up at all. I cancelled the roof, waited for barrels to fill up with stone, then order a new roof.

Four guys explode into action. To the barrels, grab some stone. Slap it on the table, go get another one. Slap it on the table, go get... Hey it shouldn't take that many stones.

Turns out some silly mason crafted a black hole to the table, and it ate all the stone.

But it was a picky little void, only eating the stones for a roof piece. Didn't test it with other colors, but my guys couldn't craft 10 blocks worth of red roof with over a hundred stone pieces.

Sounds like a great way to get rid of some excess stone. =D

i think red roofs require red dye also, once you make some red dye they should complete the roof sections.

If that were the problem he is having then it would explain why he's not getting anything from his towny's work but that would still mean there's a bug there if he's not ridiculously exagerating the numbers. The bug would just have something to do with the overuse of stone in the absense of dye. No way to know till the OP responds though.

I saw this same bug with bones during Alpha. The Townies would keep picking up bones to make the armor that I wanted them to make and take it to the crafting area. However, they would continue forever while not actually making one item.

in one of my games i had my villagers making pear pies, i ran out of pears but they still consumed all of my flour without making anything until i provided pears then they finished crafting the pies they had been working on.

Ok, problem solved. It appears that they can actually just craft halfway-finished tiles ad infinitum, but as I noticed I was missing the dye(I hastily read that flowers would suffice instead of the dye) and built an atelie to rectify this. Suddenly everyone was carrying roof-tiles in their hands.

a few dozen rooftiles were just waiting for the dye on the crafting table.

So the original problem might be solved, yet I'd still consider the ability to craft half-finished objects to an invisible stack on the crafting table as a bug. :)

The recipe only required flowers, not necessarily dye to craft the tiles. And I had enough of both dye and flowers to make at least half the roof tiles.

And that isn't the problem: There was only four guys even near the crafting tables, and they are not that stupid: If one piece of roof couldn't be built all the way, they won't start crafting another one. All four simply ran back and forth between the table and resource barrel until the stones were gone, yet the flowers and dye remain.

This may be a bug, but we need to be clear. The red roof requires stone and red color, not red flowers (you make red color from red flower with use of color mixing bench). Also if one piece of roof would not be able to be built (because lack of some resource), they will continue to build the next one, so if you do not have red color, they will use all stone to build all roof parts. When you get red color, the will use only red color and finish the building of roof parts.

Yeah, as long as they're not overusing the other materials I don't really see this as a bug. More like it would just be a way to prevent a crafting area from becoming useless if they started constructing something and found they didn't have one of the materials to continue.

It would probably be better if they just took an inventory of all the required materials before starting instead of wasting materials on things there was no way they could finish but it's perfectly functional the way it is.

Perfectly functional is a bit of an overstatement. When I realized I couldn't make the red roofs, I would've changed to a different roof-type(since there is jut the wooden roof, with no dye required), but since the blocks had been used to create a ton of half done roof-blocks, I couldn't use the materials for anything else.

That was one whole house worth of stone. If I wasn't paying attention to the crafting, I might've not noticed this at all and the materials would've been lost in the limbo that is the table of infinite holding.

It was a mistake of mine on the original post, I misread the damn thing and didn't have the materials required. But don't claim that the table of infinite semicrafted items is "Perfectly functional the way it is", because it is not. It's like Starcraft would allow you to stack up 3000 minerals on building units when you didn't have the gas to build them, and wouldn't refund them in any shape or form.
