How the hell do you dig a mine

I end up trapping my entire population down there cause this game keeps changing out to dig a damn mine. :/ I tried digging in front and digging a 3 block step ladder, but that doesn't work.... How the hell do you do it now?

The thing they still call a "ladder" now works more like stairs. If you think of them as stairs you should be able to figure out what you need to do for them to function.

The ladder thing doesn't work. I can dig a ladder in the beginning, then the other ladders just places ladders right next to each other which does nothing. I can't dig to put another ladder.

Tutorial doesn't teach you anything. What it tells you doesn't work :/ pretty dumb. Whatever, I give up. Tried everything, still doesn't work. Maybe in a year or so, I'll play again with it's maybe fixed

The easiest way is dig a hole, in it you put scaffold (or the ladder) . Than under it dig another hole, than in it put another scaffold. Repeat that until you get deep how much you want.

Yeah, the tutorial is from an earlier version of the game where the ladder mechanic was entirely different from how it works now. You have to right click and select dig a ladder or just dig a hole and then order a ladder to be placed in that hole. After that, scroll down one layer to where this ladder is going and dig out 2 more blocks in front of that ladder. Now, as long as there isn't a piece of material on the ground (in which case you'll either need to use the destroy/delete option in the right click menu or create a stockpile for your townies to move the material to) you should be able to right click and select dig ladder again.

You can repeat this process over and over to create a staircase sort of thing going down.

Then my game is bugged. Nothing on the ground and it won't let me dig the ladder...

I always save and experiment before going down, it seems to be picky about what is above and below it sometimes. Definitely does not like it if there is Air below where you are trying to put the stairs. Try scrolling down one level and using "mine a ladder" instead of "dig a ladder" also. Stairs do function just fine directly on top of each other if you can get them placed, even though it looks weird and makes no sense.

Well that's the problem isn't it, getting them placed. I've never really had any luck with that but then I also only ever use them when i'm digging down and always use the dig/mine ladder command to place them. I guess if you built "ladders" to place straight up and down it would probably work.

Will try it, it's just annoying after spending an hr or so just to trap myself in a hole cause i cant get the stairs working properly. :/ so i tried messing around in tutorial to get the stairs working but after hrs... no luck. I've looked at many vids before, but I'll try again :/

Well, if you already have a guy down in the hole then you could always do what ragnar suggested earlier and use scaffolding. Those you just place on top of each other and don't require any materials to construct but they have to be started at the lowest point. I use them in place of "ladders" in all my buildings because it takes very little space and no materials.
