Seriusly !!!
You got to take a look at the map generator !!!! less lakes and more desert in mixed maps
And reduse the ghosts, no reson that en ghost kille 3-4 townies in the begining of the game
I had maps where i was left with 2-3 townmies all ready in the first minut or so - not good enough

Actually you should always keep your townies close together at the beginning. No need to send one or some of them off to the edges of the maps.

After you upgrade with wood or stone armor/weapons, which are easily accessible, then your townies will do find with many of the monsters they meet in the overland. Or at least, survive long enough for help to come from your soldiers.

Ghosts come from dead citizens. 1 ghost for each dead citizen (in time, it takes time for the ghosts to appear) , the amount of lakes etc in mixed is really random and can be tweaked for personal preference in data/campaigns/c1/mixed/gen_map.xml, people have mods that actually generate quite a few different maps.

Don't forget to bury dead people so ghosts don't spawn.

What i usually do is find a small corner where i can grow trees so i can gear every citizen with wooden armor and stone weapons.
Then i send them all out to kill all the baddies on the map to not lose anyone.

If you can't give the body a proper burial just yet, you can always stick it in a barrel... I always build a wall around my graveyards so that later on I don't get zombie outbreaks from Living Death Whispers; but I usually keep my corpses in barrels until I have enough area cleared for a large decorated graveyard.

Also remember that the surface enemies are usually weaker than townies, but some (like this brute ) are much stronger even than an armed and armoured townie at the start of the game. The best way to fight, as you've hinted, is to mob up against the monsters and kill them before they get a blow in of their own. Bows are also a good option, set a patrol point where the monster will be just in range and then the townies can shoot them to death on the way in - make sure there's a melee-armed soldier to defend against any that make it to your archers though.

Yeah it's pretty fine, but with the latest update. you can't have soldiers running around. as the towines pretty much spend all ther time eating or making food :S it really starts to s... a bit :S

Is there a specific thing that makes the food production slow down? I can usually run an equal mix of soldiers and civilians without worrying about food production; so it sounds like you either have some new food strategies to try or a problem in your production chain. Either way, there's probably some different way of looking at the situation we can offer.
