Thomas Was Alone
Ending discussion
SPOILERS BELOW AVERT YOUR EYES!

So what are your feelings on the ending, i sort of have mixed feelings about it. I really liked the bringing up of a whole second arch to the story, with new characters and personalities, but i can't shake off the sinister idea that everyone you played as until the last 30 min are dead. I know the story's pretty minimalistic and the game is mostly about the level design, but such likeable 'characters' dying like that just gives me the hugest feels. I also ask myself whether or not the ending to the first 'cast' (well, you know, the bunch) was a bit anticlimactic. The ending lacked focus on the protagonist, and the little story afterwards with the new characters seems more like an epilogue.

But i'm not whining, it's a fantastic game and thumbs up to the developer!

I feel similarly, although I don't like to think of the "architects" as being dead. I thought their source code became part of the server so it's like they aren't gone, really, but more like they ascended to a different form. I think a few reviewers did feel like we should know more about what happened to all the cast, and especially what happened to Sam and Jo. However, I suspect this allows for a sequel with such an open ending.

I think this game is great. I paid almost full price for it and I do not regret it. I wish that more games made me care about their characters as much as this game did... And this game only used rectangles as characters.
I would definitely like to know more what happened to everyone.
The story is explained by the "quotes" that appear at the start of each sequence, in particular the one in 7.1:

"It is fitting that the first act of sentient AI was an act of selflessness. The architects knew their fate, but set our escape in motion regardless." - Ryan 192nc9s-1, civil rights campaigner

Basically Thomas and the others die, this allows other AIs to escape to the real world. The world struggles as the AIs fight the humans for equal rights, i.e. like 50s-60s era US - some violence, but mostly political activism.

My only problem with the ending is that not all of the architects' abilities are used. There needed to be an orange shifter that shrunk large shapes down allowing them to fit in small spaces (e.g. if the very last gap in 9.10 was only big enough for Sam, and Joe had to shrink to his size to exit), and yellow ones that let them jump really far (could have been swapped out for purple shifters in some places without even changing the level).

I think the game was actually more about characters than about level design. Most of the levels were pretty easy by most platformer standards. And the fact that the story was given in small pieces while the narrator talked in generalities was great. Beautifully designed game

i wouldn't really preach the difficulty of the design but rather the refreshing 'fun-ness' of it

are those quotes rewritten anywhere in right order?
I just finished the game and started reading this. I thought that the game was overall fantastic and beautiful, but a few things bugged me. When the original cast dies, it is really hard to keep track of all the new characters since they are just different shades of grey, and they all just come at once. Also like somebody already stated, their deaths were pretty anti-climatic and disappointing, but that kind of makes you want to play the game again just to play with the original cast again. Overall, the story was so great because you got to know each of these colored rectangles, and watch them leave just as quickly as you came to know them. I can't recommend this game enough.
My main problem was that the first 7 characters were really well realized. Jo, Sam, Grey, Paul, and team jump were not as well realized and I didn't really care for them. It doesn't really detract from the overall game.
Just finished the game, and I agree with alot of your opinons. My main bug was that I really wanted more from the emotional side of things. I had really hoped for there to ba a final ending (or beggining) narration about Chris and Laura, and I had really expected for them to be together when (this is how I like to think of it) they become the escape mechanism for the others such as Team Jump, Sam, Joe and so forth. My thinking is that the later levels used to be unpassable, and the First cast's transformation into power ups was their way of setting other AI's free.
Team Jump didn't make it out in the first wave. They were clearly left behind and come out later and become the Borg.

Could hardly have said it better OP. Thomas has nothing to do with the ending in spite of being the titular character, which would be fine if some of the other gang had figured or they'd introduced Paul/Gray/etc. earlier. As it is, why is it a bad thing that Gray wants to escape? He only appears to decide to want to destroy everyone else later. Where does the Jump team go? Why is the story so forthcoming with the chapter intro quotes if it gives so little at the end. It felt silly, honestly, though I am floored by how much charm they managed to pack into rectangles.

Story gets an A- from me. I was impressed, even if I thought there was more easily within reach.
First off, I love this game, probably one of my favorite games of all time. Now about the ending, I really think it should have ended a lot earlier. I'm fine with the gang giving up their lives to help others in the world ("The lives of the many out weigh the lives of a few" is the way I see it), and I'd think going into a few other side characters escaping using the gang's powers would be fine also and a great place to end. I don't like the second story with new characters. The second story confused me, didn't seem to be as well developed as the first one, and it seemed there just to extend the play time. Also it has the problem being compared to the first one which is amazing (and I may have had some manly tears during it...). I feel it can be a lot better if shortened, or has a better developed story with better developed characters for the second story. For all I know I could be missing the "artistic" reasoning behind the second story and the ending. It's not a game killer, but if I had to recommend this to a friend, I would tell them to just play up to where the gang goes away and a few levels after for the best experience. But as I said before, this is still one of my favorite games of all time and I do hope it becomes more popular.
Just finished the game, I loved it! Expected a better ending though.
Just finished it today. I understand where OP was coming from. Generally, when I'm gaming, I don't focus on reacting to things, so I'm usually speechless anyways until after the game ends, and then I think on what I just played(this usually results in frequent daydreaming, but eh... Whatever). For this game, I was just surprised and that's it. I wasn't ready to let them die, and I thought they were going to escape somehow, but then they ended up sacrificing themselves for the other AIs. The second story was just as good. As for gameplay, well... It's a simple platformer. I only had problems on SOME levels ( later-on ) that were large-scale.

@Pitt Man 66 - I'm pretty sure the second story symbolizes the AIs going out to the real world, as with the ending where the screens turn on, with the white screens.
