For Mike Bithell , request!
Hello! First of all congratulations for the beautiful game, which I bought without hesitation, even though my knowledge of English is rather limited. I think it is important, in the current gaming market, promote and support the original works and as deep as yours. Here's the point. Have you considered the possibility of subtitling the game in the major languages, in order to allow the full enjoyment even to those who have great skill with the English (also to wider distribution for your game: when they are not polygons lead the way, but the story and its message, unable to fully understand can be a deterrent for many ..). Or, perhaps, to make accessible to the community, text files, to promote amateur translations ... After all, in your game, it is about friendship and sharing, right? Please, do not leave me ALONE, in my ignorance ;) ... Hello, and congratulations again!

I love the idea of open sourcing a solution to this. Let me give it some thought and get back to you.. but yeah, translation of subtitles would be a really good idea :)

For voice, I'd definitely keep to Danny... As he's awesome.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding dedicated people to do the job for free, if that doesn't pose any legal problem. I, for one, would love to help for an English-French translation.

Since you're here, I'd like to say a word : thanks. While the puzzles were sometimes a bit of a hassle (the first levels feel like Staircase Simulator 2013), the narrative and fleshed out characters brought a few tears to my eye. Like, every 10 minutes. I especially related to James/Viridian. And as a game designer myself, I absolutely LOVED the "weirdos bringing freedom to the supposedly normal people" parable, it was done in a touching, simple, yet profound way.

Congrats, now I feel obliged to convert everyone I know to your game :)

hehe.. I'll bear your offer in mind.

And yes.. convert away. Focus your attention on those who like to gift multiple copies of games to their friends ;)

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, me too I think, even with my limited understanding of English, which the narrator is absolutely amazing. For legal problems due to a translation amateur, I do not think there is any problem ( Dear Esther and To the moon, for example, have been located in this way, and I could mention many other cases). I am Italian, but I speak fluently Spanish. I have a limited understanding of English, but will have access to the original text, I have no problem to translate into one of these two languages. The only problem is that, having played the game very little, not being able to fully enjoy the story, start a translation in this way would mean a total spoiler of the plot .. But if no one else who has already completed the game was available, I would still be more than willing to cooperate (or perhaps with a Spanish translation, for example, could I make the Italian). Waiting for news, and, first of all, really thank you, at least for your interest.

I don't think Danny Wallace should be replaced, his voice is so awesome it transcends language itself.

CaboRazo -Thank you, any support is welcome, waiting for news from Mike !
Nightstroll - Same here , Danny Wallance is awesome ! Then, if the project goes ahead, for simplicity too , I would say to limit ourselves only to the subtitles !

So, I took a look at the game files and I found out a few things. The subtitles and other texts (such as the menu and the "quotes" between chapters) can be found in the level0-105 files. You can open these files with any text editor (Notepad for example.) and these files use utf-8 character code.
There are two options for you if you want to translate the game:
Option 1: You can only edit these files with HEX editor, which means your translated text HAVE TO be as many character as the original. Otherwise the game will crash. I don't recommend this option. Translating with characterlimit is a real pain in the ♥♥♥♥, trust me.
Option 2: You wait until someone creates a script (or some magic) to make these files editable without any limitation. It can take months, even years. Or maybe it won't be editable at all.
P.S..: I wouldn't wait for Mike though. He's very busy and it could be hard for him to organize the localization. Bearing in mind he is doing it all alone.

The game is absolutely a masterpiece. Good job. ;)

Hello

I was speaking with other people tonight in a podcast we make about Thomas Was Alone, about it's freaking awesome and other things, and they said me it's have text in spanish in PS3 and PSVita, but here in the Steam store said it's only in English! Why? The text translation is owned by Sony only?

I only found this discussion about languages (and if i have to create another, i will do)

I could translate it into Spanish

I find it kind of funny how you have way better grammar and spelling than half the internet, despite having limited knowlege of the english language.

On topic, though, this is a good idea.

Any news for this? Much people want to do, at least, no officlal translations and only need a way to work of them. I hope someday Mike Bithell can tell us if there is any possibility of this.
prudis Aug 17, 2013 @ 3:38am

Mike, please, can you tell us if there is any possibility to make an amateur translation?
