"Fatal error in gc: GetThreadContext failed"
This is the message I get after what seems to be a completely random amount of time playing Thomas Was Alone. The game crashes with the quoted message and a big red "X". Sometimes it happens after just half a minute, sometimes after 5 minutes. I don't know what's causing it. The only programs that are running in the background are Steam and the avast antivirus.
My config is this one: (running Win7)

I hope there's a solution to this as I'm quite looking forward to play this game :)

I'm having the same problem. After a lengthy search, I found that the problem occurs with Unity and the Eset/Kaspersky antivirus systems, but as I'm running neither, that information wasn't very helpful. Also running Avast, though disabling it doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Disabling Avast doesn't help, no. I hope there's someone out there with an idea on how to fix this. Would be greatly appreciated.

hey, sorry, didn't see this till now..

These issues are normally conflicts, as Amras said.. I'd suggest closing literally everything you're running in the background (except Steam ;P).. also any weird controllers or hardware you might have plugged in. Can both of you try that and let me know if that solves the problem for you?

Hi Mike,

Was happening for me as soon as I booted into 'new game' the first few times, a quick google search and came across this thread, unplugged the 360 controller and it worked fine. Until now as its just crashed to desktop on about level 1.6/ 1.7.

Avast is the only other thing I have running, and I keep getting this crash, as well...

Edit: It seems to be getting more frequent the farther into the game I get, too.

Edit2: It's now crashing at the start of 6.1 very consistently. Either during the opening sequence, or when the narrative starts, but always at the beginning.

Frequently getting this specific crash as well (in addition to less specific crashes -_-). Am only running a basic suite of programs (avast, Comodo firewall, Carbonite), and it still crashes even with those disabled (which I'd rather not do, of course <_<, but 'testing'!).

Game definitely sounds cool, but if it can't even get past 0.05 without crashing...

(sorry, meant 0.05 ("this all seemed a little dangerous"), not 1.05. Yeah, I can't even get it to finish Spawn without some crash or another :< )

(EDIT: managed to get to 1.9 via the magic of "finish levels as quickly as possible before the inevitable crash." can't seem to get past there, though. Obviously, this is QUITE frustrating.)

My current resolution of this was, of all things, running the game in windows 98/Me compatibility mode (nothing more recent worked) o_O. (I have 64bit windows 7.)

I finally finished the game, using anaphysik's stratefy of "finish quickly." lol
I love the game, I love the story, but these crashes really shattered the immersion...

@Shadowspaz & Mike Bithell: 98/Me compatibilty mode held all the way through til the end! Yay! Might just be a weird thing with my system, but hey, if someone's stuck, tell them to give it a try & it just might work for them too.

Thanks for a really lovely little game, Mike!

I ended up playing and finishing the game on another computer, since it worked properly there. Loved it all the way through.

Good luck with making it work for the rest of you. Try compatibility mode, like anaphysik said. Might work for you too :)

Compatibility ended up working for me. The only downside is that the music would occasionally glitch out on loading screens before changing, but that's far more tolerable than repeatedly crashing. :P

Absolutely love the story. It's almost bittersweet, which I think is the best way to end a story, and I've played maybe two or three games that pull it off. This one does it the best, by far. :)

I'd really like to apologise to everyone experiencing this... it only started up in last few weeks.. which is really weird. My suspicion is an OS update or something, I'm investigating, but as I'm sure you can imagine as one dude these things take longer than they should.

I'm glad the compatibility fix is working for you. Anyone for whom it doesn't work, please email, and we'll see if we can work out a solution.

Again, sorry guys. Gutted that this is ruining the experience for anyone.

Hey, I'm just happy that you're active on the forums and working to fix it. Most devs don't seem to do that. They release the game, and they're done.

But, at least for me, the story and gameplay was all intriguing enough that I kept coming back, crash after crash. And it takes a really, really good story to do that. lol

I'm having this problem too.
Win 7 64bit, and I've got Avast active in my system tray too like some of the other people in this thread.
I'll try it with compatibility mode and see if that solves it.

Edit: Yep, 98/ME compatibility mode stopped the crash from re-occuring.

I am getting this problem with my computer also, what are peoples system builds. I am runnning an asus a53s with a i7 prosessor and ge force GT 540m. I have noticed with asus laptops more then others I have owned that the solder seems to wear out more quickly causing hardware malfunctions. so I was wondering if it was if it mught me a hard ware problem. though if this is happening across system builds then it is more likely an isue with the game and hot it works with sertian cards.
