Save file location?
Anyone know where the save files for this game are located? This is on Macintosh. I started playing the game on my laptop and want to switch to my main computer. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the save files are stored in the Steam cloud. I know that being in offline mode, I could only start a saved game if I got online (that might be different with the non-Steam version, but I'm not sure).

hey,

Yeah, if you're on steam, then your saves will be synched to any other machine you play on (platform independent :D)

Perfect, thanks! I thought I scanned through the store page and didn't see a Steam Cloud mention, but maybe I just missed it...

Hmmm why isnt it flagged as steam cloud then?

Anyone found the save location yet? Regardless of whether it's cloud saved it would be good to know.

I'm wondering too. I don't think it is Steam Synced because its not flagged as such, and does not sync when you close the game...

I also didn't see this working with Steam Cloud, between 2 Linux machines.

Under Linux, the save files are in ~/.config/unity3d/Mike Bithell/Thomas Was Alone/ and transferring those around accomplished what I needed :)

Well yes, the game is not tagged as featuring Steam Cloud, and obviously doesn't sync saves between different OS. Many Steam Play games have this issue. It effing sucks. Please, Devs, fix trans-platform Cloud sync!

[EDIT:]

Wow, it actually DOES sync! Only instead of resuming you need to select scenario!

I always do an offline backup of my game saves, Steam cloud or not because as the pixel cloud has shown, some pieces of data can be lost in the meandering ways of the internet. IMHO it really should be standard practice to include the save path location (and any automatic cloud sync facility) in the manual as Little Inferno pleasantly does. More seriously, the save location is:

It's located in the registry under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mike Bithell\Thomas Was Alone

(Quoted from http://savelocations.wikia.com/wiki/Thomas_Was_Alone)

Fantastic game btw, one of the few recent games that actually made me feel good after playing it instead of wondering what other dark and bloody nonsense will happen! And a very interesting concept too!

It doesn't sync automatically in my case. How do I move my save files? export them from the windows registry and then double click the .reg file in the other PC?

Yup, should work with no issues, just make sure you export the whole Thomas was alone branch and you should be good to go :)

Where is the savefile on Mac?
i dont know

I don't know about Mac, but in Linux it is "~/config/unity3d/Mike Bithell/Thomas Was Alone" so I would look for "Mike Bithell", "unity3d", or some other similar directory in Application Support

I used OSX's "iosnoop" program while playing to find the preferences are saved in a binary plist in ~/Library/Preferences/unity.Mike Bithel.Thomas Was Alone.plist along with some other of the unity based games (some of which are from Steam).

I copied the plist from my old backup to a fresh install of osx and my progress was there when I started the game!

So, good if you want to change from one OSX install to another. Bad if you want to transfer to another OS :\ I guess that just leaves the question, how to convert from one format to another? I might try to install Thomas Was Alone on a Windows VM and compare.

So, I guess to summarize everybody's posts:
  • Linux: "~/config/unity3d/Mike Bithell/Thomas Was Alone"
  • OSX: "~/Library/Preferences/unity.Mike Bithel.Thomas Was Alone.plist"
  • Windows: Location pointed to by the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mike Bithell\Thomas Was Alone" registry key

I think I'll update the wiki page gordonfreeman01 linked.
