Battle system
Is there only first person battle system or is there FF style side views with sprites included? Or, is there real time battle like Zelda?

With an earlier version of VX you could use scripts to totally rework the battle system, cant remember where i got mine from but it was monster on the left, party sprites on the right, animated for idle and attack.

It appears it's just the silly "look at this picture" battle system. Which is one of the biggest things keeping me from bothering, because if I have to develop the software to change the battle system in the first place I might as well just build a game from the ground up.

There's a bunch of ruby scripts that allow you to have many different battle systems, including side-view like FF, real time action rpg like Zelda, Turn-base like FF Tactics and even a 2D shooter is possible. Scripts are usually made by the community, you are free to copy and use them in your own game. Just go to this site http://www.rpgmakervx.net/.
The main problem with using a new battle system is that you usually have to draw your own sprites. To the guy above me, no you don't need any software lol. You just find the script you want, copy and paste them, simple as that. I've played many great games in the past that was made from previous version of the program and they were almost as good as the official rpg games in term of the battle system.

This battle system is the staple perspective enjoyed by the retro japanese fans. As such this is the default battle system. However, there are plenty of people using Ruby3 scripting to make a huge number of "custom battle systems."

Hit up youtube to look some of these up and feel free to head to the official RPGMaker VX Ace forums for help with coming up with one of your own. =P

You're comparing a small script to building a game from the ground up?

You can use scripts to completely rehaul the style. In short, yes, you can script the game to be side scrolling.

I tried some "Zelda" style scripts and many other ABS, and I haven't been satisfied with the physics of any of them, there seems to be a delay or loss of control with every hit, you see a weapon connecting and the damage pop-up, but you don't "feel" the hit.

Play A Link to the Past, in the first section alone you can feel how your swings affect the guards, they can block you and push you back, you can push them back as well, and it all flows very well, you can see and feel the impact of your swings, where the scripts I tried in RPG Maker are stiff and unresponsive.
And even though I'm learning to script, the ABS scripts I downloaded are from veterans with years of experience; why can't they do something as good as Zelda? Is it a limitation in the engine?

^ That's what I'm mostly afraid of, calling up scripts takes time, instead of an engine that supports it from the start. The possibility is a good thing but for it to feel like that's the way it's supposed to be is another. Anyone else want to comment on that?
