This game is very unpolished, but still fun.
(A lot of things are fixed by two mods I use, the 'Black Box' mod and the Tech Level Mod)
1. Ship designing:
This is excellent; module positioning really matters in combat. If you fill the interior with lots of reactors, they'll blow up when destroyed and will probably destroy your ship from the inside out.
Shields are not 'all around' your ship but instead only protect areas they're near to, so don't forget to place lots of armour to soak up the hits that get through.
There really aren't enough ship hulls and modules; each empire only gets 1 hull for each hull type (i.e. frigate, cruiser, battleship, titan etc.). Reactors never get an upgrade. Sub-light maneuvering speeds are much too low.
The AI for the other players is poor - they don't expand very much and they have a tendency to get angry about every single system you colonise. They are very, very bad at fighting and will only cause you trouble if you ignore your military for the entire game (which they'll also taunt you for doing). Their art however is really nice and each empire has its own set of ship types.
There's a nice automation dialogue that lets you automate the building and usage of scouts, freighters, and subspace projectors.
Research feels a little slow for me. The tech tree is pretty sparse and could use some more mid/end-tier stuff.
There are two (maybe three?) 'discovered' secret techs which appear according to what you do in the game. This is something the developer never got around to adding more of, which is a real shame.
4. Early Access 'dev didn't implement X':
I hear this a lot, and it seems to make up most of the reviews here. This game does feel like the dev gave up when it was 80% finished. I didn't buy this game in Early Access (Humble Bundle had it for $4) so if you're not sure, buy this on sale.
