I never played the other Devil May Cry games, so this obviously colors my perspective. However, the fanbase of DMC seems rather Japanophilic (and I'm a Silent Hill fan so I know what this affliction can do to fanbases). "IT ISN'T JAPANEEEZ THEREFORE IT SUCKS" is both terrible logic and the sign of someone trying to feign being educated and sophisticated.
That aside, the plot has some good ideas (the idea of "Limbo" and the like seems inspired by tabletop RPGs like Kult) although its social/political/economic commentary is about as deep as the kiddie pool. The cliche pseudo-Marxism has me rolling my eyes.
But what makes this game good?
The gameplay is FUN. Seriously, the combat is incredibly fun and fluid and fast. It has depth and variety and tactics yet manages to not be too arcane, the movements and animation are stylish and awesome, and stringing together combos and the like is just a blast. DmC just provides pure flowing hack-n-slash joy.
Also, the visual design is striking.
And the music. Oh man the music suits the game perfectly and totally indulges the rebellious spirit. Its awesome.
So, whether its a "good DMC game" is something I cannot comment on. Is it a good game? Oh hell yes.
+ Awesome, fun fighting with a good balance of depth and accessibility
+ Stylish, striking visual design and art direction
+ Killer soundtack
- The social commentary can come off as pseudointellectual trash that Fails Economics FOREVER
Turn off the brain. This game is all about fun combat, fun music and awesome aesthetics. And it delivers in spades. And I'd REALLY like the developer to sell replicas of Virgil's coat.
