cows cost and benefit analysis
Did some number crunching on profitability of raising cows.
this is on normal difficulty, don't know if that makes a difference
each cow at 100% productivity will produce $500 worth of milk per day
1 batch of 18k mixed ration takes $5800 worth of raw material(6000 silage, 2 hay bale, 1 straw bale) to make. Each cow will eat 300 mixed ration per day, add to the cost of straw. each cow will cost about $100 per day.
there are some additional cost to maintenance, if you use the slurry and manure it should come out even. so each cow earns about $400 per/day. takes 5 days to earn back the cost of the cow and rest is gravy.

btw, wow silage is ridiculously profitable. $800/1k, chaffing my grains w/ big X mower will yield 3 times the yield, and the wheat, barley etc only sell above 800 when there's a big demand.

Hi Jester thanks for the share, but how do you know if the cows are well fed? I just started the game so money is quite an issue. So i'm only using the grass mower to feed the cows is it ok?

It's show on second or third page of "Statistic" section in your PDA. If numbers right of "Feed trough ..." is zeros, your cows are starving.
You probably don't want cows right on start. They requires both expensive machinery and lots of time, while having very low profit.

Plant corn the harvest it with the big x harvester, put the chaff(the product of the harvest) in the bunker silo at the biogas plant. you need at least 12% fill about 40k, then compact it by running it over w/ a tractor until it's 100% compacted, you will get option to cover it. cover it after about 1hr real player time(not game time so accelerating the time doesn't do anything), it turns into silage, scoop it up w/ a front loader and dump it in the hopper at the biogas plant, and profit.

Nice :) I had no idea that could be done in this version. I'd give you a +1 mate, but it looks like Valve got rid of the Rep' system...

I gave up on the animals chickens just do not make much for it to be worth it. Cows taking to much time (expecially having to make mix feed for them) and sheeps...well.....the whole palet handling with the fork truck is to much a pain in the ares(stupid steam editor making haveing to mispell) to mess with.

I myself have sold all Four of my Cows and the equipment to maintain.Way Tooooo many Hoops. I will keep the Chickens, Sheep,Bee Houses and Wind Turbines. This game can go way out of control. The key is to Not Bite Off MORE Than You can Chew.

Poor beasties...What do you think means to "sold" a cow...

I just finished getting my cows productivity up to 100%, gave them straw, hay, silage, and mixed rations... It was A LOT of work. I think all in all, including moving of equipment, and driving back and forth, it took me 3-4 hours to really give them everything they need. I'm not really sure what the payoff is yet.. Time will tell.

I will say, however, that sheep are entirely worth it. With the Agrovector or the Deutz front loaders, loading pallets onto the little blue bail trailer, is a piece of cake. I stack up 10 pallets and take the full load. Payoff is about $20,000 each load and keeping sheep fed doesn't take much work at all.

Chickens are entirely useless in my eyes.

nox, you only need to give them mixed ration to get 100%
even straw is not required if you don't need manure.
