silage/chaff and the SPV
I've been reading over posts on the SPV to try to understand how it operates. I notice people refer to picking up silage. So you start with chaff picked up from your corn field, throw it in the bunker either loose or in bales and cover it, then it ferments and becomes silage. Then you take the SPV and hoover up some of that silage to mix with bales of hay and straw. Then you drive the SPV to the feeding trough and dump the resulting mix for the cows to eat.

Have I got it right?

yeppers ... but its actually easier if you drop in one round bale of hay and one round of straw first then top up with the silage. If yer using squares use 2 hay and 1 straw then hover up the silage ^^

If I may just add that a round bale is 6000 liters and a standard square bale is 4200 liters - as far as I know! ;)

Great, now all I need is enought $$$ to get the SPV.

Easy way to make money... cut grass, ferment it to silage and then sell at the BGA... standard map has loads of free grass... i use some helpfull mashinery

Uh oh, I thought only corn chaff could be fermented to silage....so grass works too.

I took my forage wagon to the silage bunker and tried dumping straw there to start the process but a warning appeared "straw is not accepted here!" so it must be only corn chaff and grass?

Yeah I don't think straw can be fermented. It makes sense since its already dried out.

But you can also use hay and you can mix and match. So 20k of grass and 10k of hay and 20k of corn chaff, for instance, will work.

Also you must fill the silo to atleast 10% before it can be blanketed.

Grass is the best option early in the game but once you get the ability to cut corn into chaff then its much much easier than driving around for all that grass, which takes ages using a tractor with a mower on the front and loader wagon on the back for some reason. I seem to find that using the cheap $3.500 mower is a lot quicker. Anyone else find that?

Haven't yet invested in that big all in one mower thing yet. Its a lot of money!

silage is silage whether it is made from grass or chaff - there's no difference in quality or quantity produced? I put my mower on the front and the forage wagon behind and mowed my way from the farm to the cow pasture - it gave me enough grass to make the 10% needed for blanketing. That sure is cheaper than getting the corn cutter and the corn sower!

well the difference is that with corn you can double the yield with fertilization. I don't think this works for grass and I am pretty sure the fertilization works for chaffing and not just harvesting but I am not 100% sure. But yeah.. especially early in the game, get making silage ASAP and its easy money.. I bought the field right next to the biogas plant and am just using it to grow silage and unload nice and fast at the plant. If you are gunna do the same, make sure your corn field isn't too far away because your tippers will fill up a LOT quicker than with grain harvesting.

But early on, get the dual purpose loader wagon for like 100k ish and the Kuhn mower for around 8k, attach the mower the front and the loader to the back of a decent tractor and just go around collecting grass which grows freely everywhere! Farm near the biogas plant and do dropoffs.. You can fill to 10% and ferment.. then while thats doing, fill the next silo halfway and the 3rd fully. This will ensure you're not losing any money by waiting until the silo is 100% full. As you can only sell so much silage at once anyway.. I think it stops at around 50k and then you need to wait 1 game hour.
Also just use the silo next to the cow pasture purely for mixed ration a bit later in the game. It won't be long before you can afford all the tools if you do what I said.

To be honest.. I kind of feel like cheating by making money this way because its just too easy. I hope they nerf it in a patch so we're not tempted, because it kinda ruins half of the fun.
