I would say go for it.
Like you, I haven't played the first two in the series, neither have I played the fourth one yet.
Far Cry 3 was gifted to me by a good friend and I must tell you I am extremely impressed by it. I was really surprised by how good this game is. I know nothing about the first two games at all, and I don't think it's important to have prior knowledge of those. I will most definitely buy and play the fourth one after this great experience. I am told (and from looking at the forum) that Far Cry 3 may be better than Far Cry 4, but of course that's the personal opinion of other players.
I assume you've already installed it, since you "had a quick look at it"? I'm asking because a lot a players have issues with Uplay and complain that they can't get the game to work. I was given a procedure to follow to insure that the game is installed correctly. It basically involves that you have the latest Uplay version and only click on "Play" in the Steam window, not the Uplay window, although you will register/redeem your game with both companies. (I can help in more detail if you need it.)
Anyway, short answer: Play Far Cry 3 first. And right now!
Added later:
The graphics: unbelievable. And one of the things that really grabbed me, was the scenery and the very realistic wildlife, the way the animals interact with each other (and you). I can watch the wildlife for hours, like it's real life. Simply amazing.
And, yes, you'll be roaming around, visiting villages, collect stuff, going on different missions on a huge map. Great fun.
Btw, yes it was installed correctly and played fine.
Question: is it possible to go coop for the campaign/story ?
Should I read some tutorial before starting in order not to waste money or lost a lot of time ?
Tnx ciao !
Alex
I don't think you really need a tutorial. Remember to climb as many towers as you can to unlock weapons faster and and to get better map visibility. Bows and sniper rifles are very powerful, and watch out for tigers!
As for the first two games, I don't think they really matter. I have not played them however.
They are all completely seperate stories.
youll get bored with it by end of 3 and not want to play 4.
its not that big of an open world, and there is very little to do in the world.
all the locations look extremly simlair and so theres no real payoffs for exploring.
play blood dragon and 4.
disagree 3 is way better than 4. I would definitly play 3 and 4 but 4 first.
Farcry 2 is an open-world island in Africa full of zebras and Malaria. You basically do non-stop fetch quests, burn fields, and run over zebras.
Farcry 3 is similar to 2 but instead of Africa and zebras, we have two tropical islands and kamodo dragons. However, now we have Just Cause 2 styled military bases that you can take over and are really the only reason you possess guns.
I am just now realizing there is co-op, which is full story/mission levels too. Sweet!
You're not a super-soldier in Far Cry 1, and it isn't truly linear. It's got open-world levels. And the only similiarities between Crysis and Far Cry are the 'Cry' in the name, the island location, the shooting, the open-world levels, the mix of alien/mutant enemies with human enemies, the ground-breaking graphics engines and the fact that Crytek made both of them.
And to the OP: The games aren't linked, and the first one is quite different from the others in style.
