Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is really awesome, if you are into space exploration the non-fictional way.
Your imagination is not limited.
You can practically send anything into space or on other celestial bodies.
This is, if it is able to leave the surface of your home planet without exploding... ;-)
Most people like to play the game just for fun, sending rockets and crews up into orbit or to the Mun (the moon of the planet Kerbin, where your Space Center is located).
You can gather science there to either way collect data or enhance your research of new technologies and rocket-/plane-parts, if you play career-mode (rather then sandbox mdoe, where you already habe all parts) or you can just do it FTW!
Be warned the learning curve is pretty steep, which means you will have some hard lessons to learn, until you really pull of your first spaceflight.
Nontheless this should not hinder you in downloading the DEMO first and try out if you have the guts to send "Kerbal"s into space or not. ;-)
Kerbals are the little eggheads doing funny facial expressions to the right lower screen.
The most famous is Jebediah Kerbin (aka Jeb).
He will be your first voluntary (test-)pilot.
This game is for all ages and space enthusiast, who see more in the sky, then shining lights in the nightsky... ;-)
