How fast are you "crashing" into them? Also, note that they have to be near perfectly aligned to "snap". In my experience, I had the best results going very slow (about 0.1m/s) towards my target port and having them perfectly lined up (less than 0.1 distance in x/y and also less than 0.1 degree in orientation).

Do you use the same docking ports (there are two different sizes) ?
I think it isn't possible to dock small and normal sized ones together.

Set the docking port you want to dock as your target (right click -> set as target). This will make it easier too.

you can switch vessels (map view or keys) so you can control your station and stop it to spin!

Press F and hold it to temporarily enable ASAS, press T to toggle it or try to stop it manually. If it doesn't stop spinning you won't be able to dock...ever...unless you're a space ninja.

Do you need to have an SAS module installed for F key to do some stabilising, or does it do a bit of stabilising regardless?

You need an ASAS module for it to auto-stabilise, otherwise you have to do it manually (if you can).

Now to fish it out of the ocean and stick it together again with some space tape and get more crew and ahoy we are off again.

I found a simpler method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDKxx3MaBN0

It probably wastes some more fuel but not a lot more. It sure is simpler though.
