Is Hooligan Lab's airships "cheating"?
title says it all. I was able to get a lander can to shoot up to 40,000 meters with just one cirrus balloon. I'm not usually a stickler for realism, but I don't want my crafts to be outright impossible either.

So is the mod relatively realistic? Also, on the mod's wiki it says there's some value you can set to 1 to make it realistic, but does anyone know how I would do this? Do I need a special program?

"Lift with "Real" SettingsEdit
This is if you set envelopeVolumeScale to 1, which more accurately represents the lift a real envelope of this size would be capable of."

thanks guys, looking forward to your opinions and/or wisdom (though probably mostly opinions XP)

The game is a sandbox game.

It's only cheating if you will it to be cheating.

In your case? Yes and no. Yes, this is possible. No, we haven't gotten the technology yet.

This page: http://hlmods.wikia.com/wiki/Airship_Lift_Tables will show you the lift tables for their base settings and for the more realistic "envelopeVolumeScale = 1" configs for the parts. It is default at "envelopeVolumeScale = 40" so yeah, the base Hooligan Lab envelopes are way overpowered, but you can make them realistic.

Well, I don't mind "advanced technology" (as anyone who's used ion engines would agree) but I mean would bags of hydrogen of these sizes get this much lift, or are we getting to the point where you would need a fictional gas for you to get this high?

I've been doing some research, and they seem to be about twice as effective as real life balloons. If I'm reading it right, Earth's atmosphere is about 480 kilometers, and the balloon flight record is about 53 kilometers for an unmanned balloon. Kerbin's atmosphere is 70 km (about 6.857 times thinner), so by comparison balloons should have a maximum height of 7.729 Km (53 divided by 6.857). However, I'm able to get a manned balloon up to 16-20 KM easily, and more like 30-40 km with the Cirrus balloon that the creator essentially admits is overpowered :S

So yeah, I should probably alter this a bit if I want to keep things "plausible". Anyone know how to alter numbers?

Thoughts?

WOW! Yeah that is overpowered! How do I change the settings?

The cfg file associated with the part is a text file. Just open it and change "envelopeVolumeScale = 40" to "envelopeVolumeScale = 1".
Arron Rift Jun 7 @ 8:24pm
hmm, when I click a CFG file it tries to open with adobe, and then adobe says it can't open it. What am I doing wrong?
Arron Rift Jun 7 @ 8:26pm
ah nvm, figured it out ;P

Right click it and click "open with," then see if notepad.exe is one of the choices.
Edit okay :)

I'd highly recommend using something like Notepad++ for text file editing for games (and it also works for editing source code and functions as a Notepad replacement, too). Free and open source.

Also, thanks for mentioning this about this mod, I just got it but haven't tried the parts yet, good to know that they're a bit overpowered. I'll have to tweak them.

Yeah, I've already gone in and changed all the lift multipliers to 1. It's not nearly as powerful, but it's almost more fulfilling now as when something does fly, it LOOKS like it should be able to fly!

I've also been cleaning up the textures some because personally, and I mean no offense to the creator, I just don't really like having giant, crazy octopuses stamped all over my crafts ;P.

I've already cleaned the logos off of most of the parts, but I can't seem to work on Ray and Una. Does anyone know how to alter "mbm" files? I'm probably gonna start a new thread on this, but I wanted to see if anyone here knew how.

Thanks in advance ;D

Not me. Didn't even think about scrubing those pink things off hehe, good idea!

Well, You'd be surprised what high-altitude lighter than air vehicles can lift these days.

Google is working on a system of lighter-than-air drones to hold up ultra-long-range 5G Cell Towers for Internet access in remote areas. The expect a single balloon could cover an entire region horizon to horizon, but would increase their density for redundency (not bandwidth, they could just put more equipment on them to boost bandwidth.)

The US-Military, NSA and CIA have a rig that houses several hundred of their best resolution cameras with full servo-motor lense arrays all on a single blimp-like balloon that can be stationed over an area of interest.

I've always wondered about the viability of those balloon parachutes. Anyone has found anything on that?

How are you 'cleaning up' the textures? Something like paint.net or GIMP? I didn't know the mod came with logos like that. >_>
