Spaceport was just a mess and discovery was horrible. The only way to find the halfway decent mods was through the top mods section but that section almost never changed for months at a time and you couldn't search top mods of the week, month or all time. For now Curse has been a huge improvement over Spaceport in all respects. As for ads, who doesn't use adblock these days? Adblock is basically the first thing I always install when I use a new browser.
Squad are primarily a Marketing company. That was and is their business. One of their employees had a vision to develope a game and tried to leave the company due to feeling over burdened with the pressure there. When he phoned in to quit, one of the bosses told him to take a day off then come in and they'd talk. The outcome was the company funding his dream.
