Been another thread about this. But yes it is still available online. In fact the biggest LAN event in the US (Quakecon) still play Q3A on it. This is a game that wont be offline for a very long time.

Not that I am aware of. Looks just like my CD copy looked. You need to enter the CD key though to connect and you may need to patch it to id's latest point release.

I'm curious, how does it stack against Quake Live? I owned a copy of Quake 3 from way back, but lost it. Wouldn't mind buying it again, but what's the point when Quake Live is free?

Which online community is bigger? Live or Arena?

Live never worked for me. So couldn't tell you. I just know that there is thousands of servers. Few empties but a few with players.

because quake live has paywalled lots of options, if you want to play quake live, you're going to have to get a subscription to get anything out of it. q3a, has no such subscription.

So I have the disc of this game and I can never find any multiplayer servers. If I download it off steam do they have their own set of servers or is it just a waste of time? I really enjoyed this game when it was out and would love to get back into it again.

i ended up having to install qtracker to play online. Kinda sucks that it doesnt show on steam that you are playing the game.

this is 1 of the few old games that still rocks to play, there's tonnes of servers still running & if you compare it to live well i think Quake live doesn't allow mods from when last i played it a few yrs ago.
So if you wanna play some mods then up the 5$ is worth it unless u have retail cd & or are too cheap to fork over 5$ on sale.
I wouldn't pay steams full price for this.
Lastly, this is 1 of the few games that are more then a decade old & i can still tolerate the graphics.....music & game play are what makes this game a total blast.

If you have the disc version and can't get any servers it's because you haven't upgraded to the latest point release. Hit up Quake Unity or id Software's FTP and grab the 1.31 point and you should be golden. If having any troubles with it on latest Windows try running the ioq3 engine. :)
