About the story and continuity of the game
I've never played this game or the first, but ever since L4D2, I've become really interested in Valve games and sort of a fanboy since I now own both Portals and playing TF2 24/7. Half-life and CS are the next games I'll be buying for sure, but I don't wanna spend a lot of money at once. So my question is: Should I buy the whole HL pack or just HL2? The graphics in HL1 seem, well, adequate for the time it was released, but should I play HL1 to know the story or is it not very important to the franchise? Thanks :)

Timeline: Half-Life; Opposing Force; Blue Shift then the demo Half-Life: Uplink; Half-Life 2; HL Episode 1 and Episode 2.
But if you do not want to buy the entire package, I would highly recommend downloading Black Mesa: Source which is a free mod of the original Half-Life that blows Half-Life Source out of the water.
Btw.
The original Half-Life won many awards for having the best storyline for first person shooters back in 1999, and playing it is recommended so you know what some characters are talking about in HL2.

I like HL1 better than Black Mesa, Black Mesa is kinda icky.

Just an update for future comments: I bought the whole pack, played and finished HL1 and it was amazing! The graphics were not as bad as I thought and the game was simply awesome. Now I'm playing HL2 and I'm even more in love with the series. Kudos to Valve for another amazing game which I'm sad I haven't played earlier.

You can play Black Mesa but it still isn't finished, so you can choose to wait or buy Half-Life 1 and also Blue Shift and Opposing Force, then go to Half-Life 2, Episode one and Episode two.
