Skins in HL2?
I want to give HL2 another playthrough, but certain items, I want to use mods/skins to replace some of the basic models. Although I can't seem to find a way to add skins to HL2 now. Anyone find out a way yet?

Same problem here. Theorically you have to extract the models+materials to the hl2 directory (steam/steamapps/username(or common)/halflife2/hl2) and let the scripts do the rest, but due to (more or less) recent update, it no longer works.

What is wrong with valve those times ?! A few years ago the game worked perfectly, now it suffer lightings and customization probelms.
Why do they not just put HL2 on Workshop so we can download mods/skins etc right from there ?

That's what I tried first, but nothing happened. Oh well, unless they actually fix it
In the Half Life 2, HL2 folder, create a new folder called custom. Put all the models and materials and things in there. You can also have a 1 folder organization system. Meaning, you can make a folder called Pistol, and put the models/materials/scripts/sounds in that folder. You can't have Pistol/Pistol Skin/ then the models/materials and stuff. Hope this helps.
If you're using windows, you'll need to look for a file in hl2's folder called "vpk.exe" It will create a package the same name as the folder, but will have .vpk at the end. Drag that new folder to the folder called "custom" in your hl2 directory.
Steampipe gives all the games an addon system. Instead of "steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/hl2" the directory is "steamapps/common/Half-Life 2/hl2/custom/AddonNameHere
Ive been able to get certain skins to work using these methods. I suspected that that's what it needed to be done, but had no idea how to. Thanks guys
really works, Thanks,:batsilo:

Does one actually need the vpk.exe? I don't have it and I made the custom folders in the root folders, but its not working.

No, just make a folder called "custom" and another folder inside that called mycustomstuff (or a single name, as the game will think that that folder is where to pull files from to use)

This is what it looks like on my computer

K:\Computer\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\custom\mycustomstuff\(Everything else)

Everything else = Materials, models, sounds, cfg folders that the skins/mods would use

So you Can only Install 1 mod? cause all files will be replaced by another files with mods when you want to install another mods

the casualization of gaming is why the industry is destroyed
If you want weapon models and animations, idk how to do that. I do know how to make textures work.
Extract them into your Half-Life 2 custom folder
Make sure they have mod names for the folder with the mod in it
Done
