Can I delete extra language files (.gcf) to save space?
Under steamapps along with the engine files, there are the other language files for HL2. For example, "half-life 2_koreana.gcf" as well as Portugese and Thai. The Korean one is 747 mb and I am running out of hard drive space.. If I only expect to use English, is it ok to delete these?

I'd say go ahead. I'm not an expert but I don't think it should mess with your gameplay.

I think if you delete this file, steam will download this file again

That's correct. If you verify the Game Cache. It will cause all the missing language packs to be redownloaded.

And what if I don't verify game cache any time soon, will it download anyway every time I try to play?

no, you can only verify game cache manually, I use it when i'm modding games so i don't have to back up anything, its quite useful.
