Half Life 2 Still needed for playing mods ?
I already own Half life 2 since the release of it but I see they are on sale now till new year and a friend of mine talks about the mods he sees from the Source engine like Gmod,Zombie panic et cetera on Youtube video's but I'm not quite sure if you still need Half Life 2 to play these mods. Otherwise I could gift it to him (as the nice person I'm :) )

It depends on the mod. Some are just for the source engine (2006 or 2007, depends on the mod, I keep both), which can be downloaded by going to library>tools and right-clicking and downloading them. Others require half-life. I recommend looking into their install instructions. As a rule of thumb, it only requires a game if specific half-life 2 add-ons are mentioned. I could be wrong though, as I'm fairly new to this.

I have gotten No More Room in Hell working, and Black Mesa says that it only needs the source engine w/o half-life 2 so far.

That is actually what made me doubt about the thing. The mods I'm talking about is mostly Zombie Panic,Gmod (I know you need Counterstrike for it ;-) ) and simular mods. Otherwise should I googl it ? ;P

Zombie Panic!, according to the steam page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/17500/), needs any Source engine game to be installed, like CS: Source or Half-Life 2. There is a complete list of games that includes source sdk: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?category2=16

Thanks ! But Team Fortress 2 isn't one if them right ?

That's a difficult question, 'cause Orange Box is on the list, but not the stand-alone Team Fortress 2. I guess TF2, even free-to-play, includes source sdk, but you should ask Valve to be sure.

Pretty Sure you need Half Life 2 for mods and for the good of PC gaming in general.
