found a hard copy of HL 2, but can't play?
So I was going through that stack of games we all have sitting at the back of the closet, and I pulled out a copy of HL2. Haven't played it in years, so I thought I'd give it a run through just for fun. Installed the game, and now the shortcut takes me to steam where it says I have to purchase the game to play it...I don't understand. I have the original game, even have the software key (don't ask me how, but I still have the original jewel case)...but there's no place to put in the product key. Seeing as I've bought the game I don't see why I should have to re-buy it...is there something obvious I'm not doing here?

On the bottom left of the steam window, there's a '+ Add a game' button, press the 'Activate a product on steam...' and input the CD key. There's a possibility this wont work, because the serial key might have already been used on an existing steam account.

If it doesn't work, you could try sending a support ticket to steam support (https://support.steampowered.com/).

So I borrowed the game from a friend and the cd key is linked to her account. Is there a way to activate it on mine to or is it once per account?

once per account:(. the days of sharing games are pretty well gone, unfortunately.
