Half Life One Question.
I want to get half life two, since it seems like a good game. My question is:
Should I get half life one?
I asked a friend who loves half life two, but he said half life one sucked. So, should I get it?
If it's important to understand the game I will. If not though...So, opinions?

You don't have to buy it, it's just that it's one of the best games ever created.

You don't have to play it to understand the storyline, it just helps a little. But you can get Black Mesa Source (a fan made remake) of Half-life 1 for free. All you need is the SDK mod tool (which is free) installed.

Thanks. I'm checking that out.

Your friend probably played the original game several years after it was released, either that, or heard people praising it to high heaven and got sick of it. Get HL1 on the source engine, and it won't look as dated. It's a game worth remembering, and worth playing.

Source engine? Sorry. I'm still new to the computer gaming world. xD

I would highly recommend getting the first Half-Life. Even though it has rather cheesy DirextX 7 graphics, the game play is still great. Also there are a lot of great mods for it you can play.

tempted to.

Half Life one is not required to get an excellent HL2 experience, most of the events in HL1 is covered by HL2, however, the game is very historical, but there are a couple things you should take into account before playing this game.

One, it is very old, and while this does not cripple gameplay in the slightest, sometimes older graphics can bug people if they're jumping back from newer games.

Two, there are not as many locales and venues as the HL2 series, in HL1, you travel through Black Mesa, which consists of a lot of halls, basements, missle silos, the occasional outdoor area, and Xen, which is albeit interesting, you don't go that many places.

Three, the game is graphic in its own unique sense to half life 2. You do watch innocent scientists get killed and you must shoot U.S. servicemen, which can be extremely sensitive to some players.

tl;dr, go watch some trailers, machinimas, and Let's Play videos, most of it will cover the Half Life one experience. I reccommend "Freeman's Mind". Hope this helps!

none of those bother me. killing scientists is always fun [[thanks prototype]]
killing soldiers is not a deal thanks to call of duty.
and i like older game graphics. but if its not very travel wise then...idk. still tempted to try it. or at least youtube the hell out of it.

Yes, do it. There's still a butt ton of exploration though. Think along the lines of nova prospekt, except bigger and you can go outside. If you like the feel of older games, I would highly reccommend this, it's really one of the first computer FPS to contain an elaborate storyline.

So yes, youtube all the juice you can out of it.

oh god. depending on exploration it can ♥♥♥♥ me off. XD Im looking for a youtube whole play of it. with older games, exploration and me does not work.

there are some parts that kinda went in circles as far as exploration goes, most of it is pretty linear, but Valve being Valve, they always have good payoff for hard work in a game. Another upside is that it can pretty much run on just about any computer, so if you're stuck somewhere and need enertainment, you can run it pretty dang well on just about anything you have.

Yeah, Black Mesa Source is free, I'd look into that.

i was going to, but was debating because of the mirrors.

Oh come on, I was never offended by that. As any Soldier can tell you, When a "Friendly" shoots at you, they become the "Enemy".

Oh man, you have to look up Freeman's Mind.

It's awesome!
