Why do people love this game?
I played this about a year ago and tbh it was pretty aweful. It may have been good when it came out but now it is just too old. not trying to argument. just please explain to me why people think this is the best game ever made?

Maybe it is just you and not the game being bad, because the game certainly isn't. In fact, it is one of the best games ever made, and not even close to "pretty aweful".

Im asking for a reason why you think it is so good?

Opinions gonna be opinions, but the reason why I liked it was to me the story, gameplay and general game was extremely appealing to me, I liked the dystopian future which has been completly reshaped since the Resonance Cascade. I know it won't help much but thats why I love the franchise.

Well, because graphics don't matter. It's the story that does. That's what, in my eyes, makes it amazing, not to mention going back to Half-Life 1, the graphics may be waaaay off, but if you look at it for being 1998, you'd have to agree that graphics was great. But story is what really captured everyone's attention, even today. I see it the best ever made for reason of story:

Your a scientist from Black Mesa, survivor of the incident, you must now face a world overtaken by the aliens, the Combine, and fight back along the Resistance, you come eventually face to face with Dr. Breen, your old administrator from BM who has taken power from the Combine...

I really don't know what about it. Although it's not the best game in the world, it deserves a place in top twenty for story and lore. That all imo.

Agreed, the game is old, but something about it still makes me go back from time to time, and it's unexplainable.

Yeah, I know Counter Strike has a much better story.

Maybe you should consider hatering around somewhere else. I am sure no one will have any arguments against Call of Duty Ghoats being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, why don't you make a thread there about that?

@Lord Tyhyio The Savior;people, and I mean lots of people loved this game, and still do. your not going to get one explanation why they do, your going to get lots of explainations why they love it, for different reasons. Some like how the gameplay feels, some have favorite characters, etc. We all like what we like.

OP has only played about 5 hours of this game, and didn't even get through Ravenholm, according to his achievements. The game is at its best AFTER Black Mesa East (not to say I didn't enjoy chapters 1-6, I did). The story isn't that cheesey after that, either. Probably because there is more story, and not just travel.

Also OP, what difficulty did you play HL2 on? If you're playing on Easy, switch to Normal. If you find Normal boring as well, go to Hard.

I personally love this game for a number of reasons and I'll try to share the few that matter most to me. One thing I really enjoy about the half-life games overall and half-life 2 is no exception, the game consitently lets you play and move forward at your own pace and leaves the player lots of time to explore the nooks and hiding places in the level to find either supplies or possibly other items, dead bodies, wall drawings, anything that might tell a "story" about what has happened in that location over time or long ago. It's these lil bits of untold story that really draw me into games and I think half-life 2 does a really good job at not overusing the same areas or items in the same way over the course of the game. It's true there are moments where you feel compelled to move forward fast or in a few cases there is danger to lingering in certain areas but overall I'd say the best moments I've had in gaming is exploring the lost and dried up coast line on the dune buggy and climing under that huge bridge while I try and jump from section to section, just sorta taking in the view as I go. Or the exteneded airboat section down the canals where you can choose to make all these lil stops along the way and explore all the resistance bases that are either abandoned or worse.

Another thing that I find enjoyable about half-life 2 was how the combat ramped up over time from small skirmishes and a lot of defensive firefights to the later sections of the game where things really start to feel more like a war than just firefights. There was a lot of interesting combat senarios late game between the different unit types and I like how the weapons are balences overall. All the powerful stuff has only a few shots compared to the more lightweight guns which have a bit more so picking which targets to take out with which gun is fun. I enjoy games where they give me a magnum revolver early on but then seriously limit my ammo so that if I choose to carry that clip of bullets through the next 3 levels without spending it I can then use it to take out a group of enemies I really don't like. Early game, a lot of the special ammo types are limited to only the most secret of ammo caches so unless you find them all some thigns you won't get till quite a bit later on. I know my hours on steam don't reflect my experience but I've played this game to death long ago before steam is what it is today. I like the old resistent evil games for this very reason, being able to complete the game in my own way by picking and choosing what resources to use and when. Nothing felt scripted when it came to my weapon choices except when you are forced to use rockets for certain fights against large machines but those fights were often broken up by other battles or had more to them which involved navigating the envirorment as the battle goes on to keep it interesting.

Finally I liked the idea behind the main character. He's a scientist whose trying to fix/survive what he's done from the first game, taken ahead some number of years and then thrust back into the world that he's responsible for in some ways due to his actions from the first game though it wasn't just him alone who started it all, you were still part of it. It doesn't really give the player anything else beyond that and a character model to go on which is why I enjoy playing as him so much. Having a semi-blank slate to build my own thoughts and ideas of what he might say during sections of the game or trying to imagine what's running through his head can often be more interesting to me than having a character constantly read their thoughts out loud while walking down a hallway. Something which I think was a bit overdone in games these days. Also the ways in which you are lead through the game seem reasonable enough without turning your struggle into a bloodthristy rampage. You cause destruction on large levels but it always felt justified within the world of the game. You aren't some super soldier whose going to wipe out 900 aleins because that's your job. Instead you want to simply get from point A to point B to do an objective and some really nasty people/things stand in your way of that so you have to decide how to get around them or take them but you aren't the one actively seeking aggression I guess is what I'm trying to say. There's very few moments of forced outward hostility that don't feel justified in some way for the greater good.

Incredible atmosphere, incredible voice acting, incredibly varied gameplay (LOTS of puzzles where you're never given any help or advice, it's up to you to figure it out) and locations, pretty scary and original enemy design, intense action moments and lots of oppurtunities to solve different problems in different ways, balanced weapons, engaging story, challenging difficulty, incredible AI, perfet controls, fantastic soundtrack which is always played at the most intense moments to enhance the experience... The list goes on.

It's a shame you didn't like it, but I suppose everyone can't in the end, we're all different. :)

believe it or not, but without Half life 2, we would not have the physics or graphics we have in games today. Some examples might be Skyrim, Portal 2, Far Cry 3, and other popular titles.
And the story is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome and everyhting about that game is a masterpeice.
