Your a scientist from Black Mesa, survivor of the incident, you must now face a world overtaken by the aliens, the Combine, and fight back along the Resistance, you come eventually face to face with Dr. Breen, your old administrator from BM who has taken power from the Combine...
I really don't know what about it. Although it's not the best game in the world, it deserves a place in top twenty for story and lore. That all imo.
Agreed, the game is old, but something about it still makes me go back from time to time, and it's unexplainable.
Also OP, what difficulty did you play HL2 on? If you're playing on Easy, switch to Normal. If you find Normal boring as well, go to Hard.
Another thing that I find enjoyable about half-life 2 was how the combat ramped up over time from small skirmishes and a lot of defensive firefights to the later sections of the game where things really start to feel more like a war than just firefights. There was a lot of interesting combat senarios late game between the different unit types and I like how the weapons are balences overall. All the powerful stuff has only a few shots compared to the more lightweight guns which have a bit more so picking which targets to take out with which gun is fun. I enjoy games where they give me a magnum revolver early on but then seriously limit my ammo so that if I choose to carry that clip of bullets through the next 3 levels without spending it I can then use it to take out a group of enemies I really don't like. Early game, a lot of the special ammo types are limited to only the most secret of ammo caches so unless you find them all some thigns you won't get till quite a bit later on. I know my hours on steam don't reflect my experience but I've played this game to death long ago before steam is what it is today. I like the old resistent evil games for this very reason, being able to complete the game in my own way by picking and choosing what resources to use and when. Nothing felt scripted when it came to my weapon choices except when you are forced to use rockets for certain fights against large machines but those fights were often broken up by other battles or had more to them which involved navigating the envirorment as the battle goes on to keep it interesting.
Finally I liked the idea behind the main character. He's a scientist whose trying to fix/survive what he's done from the first game, taken ahead some number of years and then thrust back into the world that he's responsible for in some ways due to his actions from the first game though it wasn't just him alone who started it all, you were still part of it. It doesn't really give the player anything else beyond that and a character model to go on which is why I enjoy playing as him so much. Having a semi-blank slate to build my own thoughts and ideas of what he might say during sections of the game or trying to imagine what's running through his head can often be more interesting to me than having a character constantly read their thoughts out loud while walking down a hallway. Something which I think was a bit overdone in games these days. Also the ways in which you are lead through the game seem reasonable enough without turning your struggle into a bloodthristy rampage. You cause destruction on large levels but it always felt justified within the world of the game. You aren't some super soldier whose going to wipe out 900 aleins because that's your job. Instead you want to simply get from point A to point B to do an objective and some really nasty people/things stand in your way of that so you have to decide how to get around them or take them but you aren't the one actively seeking aggression I guess is what I'm trying to say. There's very few moments of forced outward hostility that don't feel justified in some way for the greater good.
It's a shame you didn't like it, but I suppose everyone can't in the end, we're all different. :)
And the story is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome and everyhting about that game is a masterpeice.
