Half Life 2 is using the same save files for different Steam accounts
As the title suggests, I have a problem where Half Life 2 is using the same game saves for different Steam accounts.

I purchased HL2 when it came out years ago, but purchased Episodes 1 and 2 during a recent sale when they were super cheap. During the same sale I also purchased HL2 and the episodes for my son's Steam account so he could play.

Anyway, I have been the only one to play HL2 up until now. When my son tries to play the game, he is able to load my game saves, and has access to start the game from any chapter as if he's the one that's been playing. Ideally, when he starts the game he should be starting from a clean slate.

I've looked at the game's file structure, and the saves are stored in "Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\save". Shouldn't it be storing the game saves in a location unique to each Steam user?

Apparently no one else is having this problem, as I was unable to find anything remotely similar after an hour of searching. Is it possible that only one Steam account can play the game at a time?

Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you playing at differnet PCs or the same one?
Because if you're playing on the same one, the savve files on your hard drive will possibly be saved on your son's account
Btw, good job for showing your son the half-Life series. ;) Father of the year.

Allow me to post one more time, if you wanna fix this, then here's something that can help you.
Do you have more than one hard drive? If not, buy one andd install it into your computer, install your sons account onto that hard drive and see if it works from there.
Though, make sure you clean out your son's Steam cloud before you do this.

Thanks for the reply.

This is the same PC. Yes, I am concerned that my save files will be synced to his Steam account. It's not a crisis or anything, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having your own account. ;)

I do have an additional hard drive, but I'm not sure how I can install my son's Steam account in a different spot in the file system. Steam has been installed into a single location on the SSD (C:\Steam) and we both use it separately, with different Steam accounts.

The simplest solution that I've been able to come up with is to simply move my save files to a different location before he plays. I haven't tried that yet, but you'd think it would work. I'll give it a try and post back with the results.

I don't recommend copying his saved files onto this other hard drive, but I do recommend doing a clean uninstall
1.delete your file directory, account name\Steamapps\Common\Half life 2,
2. now go to your sons steam library, and right click on the game and in the tab that opens up, click "Delete Local Content".
3. Now, reinstall his game, but when you click "Install," a window will pop-up, and on the first page of the installation, click on the arrow pointing down, and choose the hard drive you just installed.

There you have it! You just reinstalled your son's game on a different hard drive.

Now should you do this everytime? Mmm... No.
