The Sad Truth of Half-Life 3
The Half-Life franchise is considered one of the greatest in video game history. Half-Life 2 itself won 39 Game of the Year awards and was claimed to be an inovative new gaming experience. With that pedigree, you can imagine that the hype for Half-Life 3 has been unmatched by that of any game in history, even if it's been building up for nearly ten years. That, sadly, is where the real trouble lies. I'm not saying that Half-Life 3 will never be released-I have complete faith that it will be. I'm, saying that this waiting and constant anticipation in the wake of the previous titles is what's going to be a problem.

To elaborate the best I can, here's an analogy: Let's say that, when you were seven years old, you knew what you wanted to be when you grew up. You directed your entire life in the way that would allow you to be what you wanted to be and you always had this confidence that you would love this job and that it would be amazing. You worked hard and were patient, getting into your dream school and, eventually, your dream career. You get here and it is, in fact, amazing. The people you work with are great and friendly, you love doing what you do and people think that you are one of the best in your field. By retirement, you've put about fourty great years into this job and look back on it fondly; however, you will still be disappointed. Maybe it won't be noticable, but you will be. You will be disappointed because our minds create this pinacle of perfection, this unreachable level of greatness that we expect out of something like that. It's even worse when things don't live up to expectations, but you can believe it HURTS when they ARE great, but aren't what you wanted and your hopes and dreams suffer a crack that cannot be fixed and so will your reality. There will be a level a resentment towards realtiy, even if reality is GOOD.

We all know that it won't be everything we hope, but those thoughts will always stick in our minds, no matter how hard we try to push them away. Half-Life 3 could be a great game; it could be the greatest game ever made with twice as many awards as those before it, but some small, quiet part of us will hate it. It'll take away some of the joy that we're going to feel when it comes out and we get our eager hands on a copy. I'd tell you not to get your hopes up, but we've all had our hopes up since 2007. Let's just hope that it'll be good, even if THAT turns out to be too much to ask.

I just saw you on another thread. Are we both just bored and reading the discussions?

Some games take a while, like the distance between Star Wars Battlefront 2 and its "sequel" (More of a reboot but everyone was hoping for a third game) it took a decade, 10 years for that to happen. Sure that series kept changing makers but what I'm saying is that some things take time plus it also depends on the recources Valve is dedicating to it, perhaps they have more "important" things in mind or they're trying to be more secretive due to that leak that occured during the developement of Half-Life 2. So HL3 could happen (don't see why not) but maybe they want to make it as perfect as they can or just aren't really focused on it as of the now and the near future.

Yes, I am aware of all of this. That's not what this post is about. I said in the post that I have complete faith that it'll happen.

Sorry I misunderstood, yeah I understand what you're saying. Everyone looks forward to a new game but once its out, there's always that group of people are like "Why did they change this or that? Why couldn't they have it like in the original. The original was better." and etc.

HL3 is already a disappointment because of the waiting time, even if it turns out to be a fantastic game. To me, it's like I can have my fantastic dream job, but by the time I got it, I'm 60 years old.

I think Valve's just gonna release a bunch of spin off games in the same universe. Then, once people learn what to expect from them they can release Half Life 3.

If valve are working on it and spending loads of time, be thankful, because it won't turn up with a broken half assed ubisoft game.
Valve will give us something good to look forward to, and then when we get it remember and enjoy.

I think we should all just forget about Half LIfe 3, there's nothing more to be said about it.

Do you really have to write an essay on the steam discussions?

It's the discussions. We can talk about what we want as long as its related to the topic of the board. You don't have to read it, so it's not really a problem, is it?
