Never played the first game
Can I play this one without playing the first? Or I would miss a lot of fun and references? Just don't want to buy the first one without a good sale due to low score on metacritic

I actually just started playing today and I haven't played the first one, but I'd like to. I quite enjoy it actually.

The first game is actually really fun, not sure why it'd have a low score, you don't HAVE to play the first game to understand the second one, but you will miss a few references to the original, especially later in the game where more characters from the original game start popping up.

There are also some spoilers about the original game here and there, but if you aren't going to play it it doesn't really matter.

In reviews I've read, the low rating of E&H:TB was caused by some technical issues (as I know, the game was initially written in Java), not very convenient interface and sloppy graphics (I personally find it charming).

It's all true, but on the other hand, all these flaws are compensated with an excellent (and sometimes very dark) story, zany characters, black humor and blue schizo-rabbit, capable to comment on almost everything in the game.
