There is a "storyline" near the endgame, it's not explained, and it's more up for your own interpretation as to what actually happens.
I do not suggest looking up a walkthrough, since it spoils the entire game (as it's all about the puzzles).
Your statement about the solutions to the puzzles being "completely random" is very very wrong. The game uses certain puzzles to "teach" you new mechanics that you have to apply in other puzzles, none of them are "random solutions", it all makes sense if you learn the mechanics it is trying to teach you.
If you would like to see the walkthrough I made, it's here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/50560091
Be warned though, major spoilers. It contains tutorials for every puzzle, and explains game mechanics, bugs, glitches, speedrun routes, etc. etc.... *everything*.
